The Programme for Palaeobiology encompasses education and research in a broad range of palaeobiological topics, including the Proterozoic Biosphere, the origin and early evolution of animals, and the palaeobiology of Caenozoic nanoplankton. Teaching responsibilities are primarily within the Bachelor and Master Programmes in Earth Sciences and Palaeobiology. Duties/Project description: This project is to study patterns of preservation and diversity in organic-walled microfossils (OWM) across the important late Precambrian-Cambrian transition in Baltica and elsewhere. The project will focus on the controls governing the distribution and diversity of OWM assemblages with the aim of understanding taphonomic pathways in these fossils of emerging importance in understanding the Cambrian explosion. The successful candidate will be expected to be able to use standard OWM processing techniques including HF work after appropriate training, as well as picking and photography. He or she will also be asked to undertake teaching up to 20% of their time. Field work may be undertaken if necessary.

Requirements: The successful candidate will have a Masters degree or equivalent in an earth or biological science. Experience working with microfossils is a merit. Strong motivation and capacity for independent work are important qualities. Ability to initiate and organize research is highly desirable. The ability to cooperate and good communication skills are required. The candidate’s aptitude in interacting with the surrounding community, informing people about research and development work are also important. The applicant must be proficient in spoken and written English.
