Uppsala University, Department of Pharmacy

The Department of Pharmacy at Uppsala University is devoted to research and teaching related to the development, manufacturing and use of pharmaceuticals. The Department is internationally recognized for its research on drug delivery and pharmaceutical formulation. The department is located at campus BMC, a multidisciplinary research and teaching center at Uppsala University. The research is developed by five research groups, for an overview of the profiles of the research groups, go to www.farmfak.uu.se/farm/.

The Department of Pharmacy is also the academic hub of a recently established joint academic/industry collaborative initiative, the Swedish Drug Delivery Forum (SDDF), with ten industrial partners and financially supported by Vinnova (Sweden´s Innovation Agency). The aim of the forum is to develop a world leading research milieu within the field of Drug Delivery. Especially within the areas of parenteral, oral and pulmonary drug delivery results to the benefit of the patient in terms of therapeutic effect and safety is to be expected. The forum will also improve the competence supply in drug delivery science to the benefit of the Swedish life science-sector. The science program of the SDDF is now under development and we are eagerly seeking highly talented and motivated coworkers to help us build a flourishing research milieu and a strong research program.

Uppsala University hereby declares one position to pursue PhD studies within the science program of the Swedish Drug Delivery Forum open for applications within the following project:

Novel in-vitro models for subcutaneous administration of drugs: In this project we will develop and evaluate novel in vitro methods to model the behaviour of pharmaceutical products administered subcutaneously (SC). The purpose is to improve the mechanistic understanding to facilitate the innovation and development of formulations with high bioavailability of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and small variability between patients. A special focus will be pharmaceutical products based on biologics. By constructing a physiologically relevant model of the extracellular matrix, we will mimic in vitro the fate of different types of drug formulations after administration in humans, including the rate of release and absorption of the API by uptake into the blood and lymph capillaries. A combination of advanced analytical and imaging techniques and pharmacokinetic approaches will be used to determine the key factors governing the transport of the pharmaceutical product in the SC environment the absorption kinetics of the API.

Qualifications: The successful candidate should have qualifications for a relevant area, such as Pharmacy/Pharmaceutics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or Physics, and have good communication skills in oral and written English. Information about postgraduate studies, including eligibility requirements and admission rules, can be found at http://www2.medfarm.uu.se/utbildning/forskarniva/. Selection of candidates is made by the supervisors in consultation with the department's group for postgraduate studies. The PhD student will be formally accepted by the Postgraduate programmes committee and salary placement is done according to local guidelines at Uppsala University. The holder of a PhD-student position shall primarily devote her or his time to own research studies. Other departmental work, such as educational or administrative duties, can be part of the position (max 20%).

How to apply: The application should contain a letter in which the applicant describes her- or himself, motivates why she or he has applied for the position, states relevant qualifications and indicates research interests and plans for the future. It must contain a CV including at least two references, authorized copies of relevant certificates, degrees and grades, and copies of your master thesis and other documents, such as publications, that you want to invoke.
