Duties/Project description:

This PhD position is embedded into the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) “EvoCell”. This network aims to investigate the evolution of cell-types and tissues in a diverse group of animals including vertebrate and invertebrate model- and non-model organisms.

Single-cell and tissue genomic and transcriptomic techniques will be developed and applied for these research organisms. In addition, standard methods such as in-situ hybridization for the detection of gene transcription, and RNAi for the knock-down of gene function may be applied to further investigate the function of developmental key-factor genes identified by single-cell/tissue transcriptome analysis.

The member-laboratories of the EvoCell network will work in close collaboration, and the members, including the involved PhD students will meet regularly for the exchange of data and for the purpose of training. The network brings together eight international research groups and two non-academic organisations.

For further information about “EvoCell”, see: https://www.evocell-itn.eu

The working title for the project offered here is:

Evolution of the Ecdysozoan head and nervous system: insights from cell identity in priapulids

It is, however, possible to extend the project towards velvet worms (Onychophora), another group of animals we are highly interested in. The specificity of the topic (head development, nervous system development), can be altered according to a PhD student’s personal interest.
