Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för kemi - Ångström

The Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The department has more than 200 employees and has a turnover of 200 million SEK. At the department's six programs, we conduct very successful research of a high international standard. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has education assignments in engineering and civil engineering programs and Master's programs. More information is available on our website.

Subject description: The research focuses on how material properties are affected by chemical composition and crystal structure. For example, it is studied how the chemical composition affect the magnetic properties. An important area is new alloys for permanent magnets without rare earth metals, another is magnetocaloric materials. The post doctor will work in the border area between chemistry, physics and materials theory; more specifically, with the synthesis and characterizations of new magnetic materials for application in green energy technology.

Work duties: The main duties involved in a post-doctoral posistion is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours.

The project will be carried out in the group of Associate Professor Martin Sahlberg at the Department of chemistry-Angstrom. The project is a collaboration between both academic and industrial partners. Synthesis using high temperature methods such as electric arc furnace, induction furnace and possibly solid-gas methods will be used. Characterization will primarily be conducted using diffraction methods like single crystal X-ray diffraction, Neutron diffraction and in situ measurements using synchrotron radiation.

Requirements: For employment as postdoc, the applicant should have a PhD exam or an international equivalent within the field of inorganic chemistry/materials chemistry or other for the position relevant fields, within a maximum of three (3) years before the final application date. During certain circumstances, an earlier PhD can be acceptable. Certain circumstances include leave due to illness, maternity leave, in trade unions, etc.

The assessment of applications is based primarily on the applicant's ability to conduct independent research based on scientific skill. Greater importance is attached to the quality of individual scientific work, than to the amount of publications.

Applicants should be highly motivated and interested in research in chemistry and physics, as well as research on sustainable energy. Documented knowledge in high-temperature synthesis with different methods, diffraction (X-ray, electron and neutron) and general knowledge of structure-property relations is a requirement, as well as very good oral and written proficiency in English.

Additional requirements: The ability to work both independently and in a team is essential. Practical experience in development of novel alloy systems, magnetism and knowledge of different synthesis and analysis techniques are considered strong merits. Documented experience in solving magnetic structures from neutron diffraction is a merit.

Application procedure: The application must include a CV, copies of diplomas and transcripts, publications, and a short description of your research interests. The applications will be assessed according to the following criteria: compliance with eligibility criteria, previous experience in related fields as well as personal suitability. The research group is small but highly productive with high requirements on collaborative skills.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
