Uppsala University, Department of Medical Sciences

Project description: Our research group, Cancer pharmacology and computational medicine, performs research in the area of cancer pharmacology and drug discovery, with a special interest in drug repositioning (i.e. finding new indications for approved drugs).

In a recently performed project, we identified the anthelmintic compound nitazoxanide as a promising candidate for cancer treatment. We demonstrated that nitazoxanide targets starved non-dividing cancer cells. The research project will further explore nitazoxanide as a potential anti-cancer agent, by characterizing mechanism of action and sensitivity of different cancer types. The project will also include biomarker identification and characterization of potential drug resistance mechanisms.

Qualifications expected: A basic degree in Biomedicine or other relevant subject area and further education in e.g. cancer biology and molecular biology is a requirement (at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 hp at advanced level), as well as a good practical touch in the laboratory and proven ability to work independently. It is also an advantage if you have practical experience in laboratory work with a focus on cancer cell lines and methods such as clonogenic assays, cell kill assays, HTS instrumentation, acustic drug dispention and automated microscopy. Good computer skills including MS Excel and MS Word are a requirement, and further experience is an advantage. When recruiting, great importance will be attached to personal qualities such as ability to interact and communicate. You are responsible, structured and methodical in your work. Good knowledge in both Swedish and English is a requirement.

The rules governing this process can be found (in Swedish) in Högskoleförordningen 5 Chapter 1-7 §§ and in University rules and guidelines: http://regler.uu.se/search/?hits=30&languageId=1&search- language_en=English
