The Department of Medical Cell Biology at Uppsala University has a strong and international research environment with over 100 scientists, including around 25 PhD students, 20 postdocs and 30 researchers and professors.

Project description: The PhD student will work within the field of immunology and type 1 diabetes. The overall purpose of the project is to increase the understanding of key roles of regulatory immune cells, which produce anti-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-10 and interleukin-35. Using flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry and other in vitro immunological assays, the PhD student will work on the kinetic responses of regulatory immune cells by using animal models of type 1 diabetes and human samples from diabetic patients.

The work will be conducted in the research group of Stellan Sandler (http://www.mcb.uu.se/res/groups/ss/).

Duties: The successful candidate will engage in research work and doctoral studies. Other duties at the department, i.e. administration and teaching, may be included in the employment up to a maximum level of 20 %. 

Requirements: The candidate should have a Master of Science (MSc) in biomedicine, biology, engineering, life sciences, medicine or another relevant area and have good communication skills in oral and written English.  He/she must also have experience of handling experimental animals and have obtained a FELASA Category C course certificate/function B course certificate.

Desirable skills: Good knowledge and experience of flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, intracellular staining, ELISA, multiplex ELISA, handling of human samples, regulatory T and regulatory B cells, tolerogenic antigen presenting cells, in vitro immunosuppressive assay, embedding of tissue and tissue sectioning, and image processing software e.g. Adobe illustrator.
