Ph.D. in Musicology, within the research program Engaging Vulnerability - Hiring in process/Finished, not possible to apply

At the Department of Musicology, we study and teach music from different periods and cultures from historical, aesthetic and cultural perspectives. The research profile and expertise at the department has traditionally been focused on Swedish and European music history, but we welcome applicants from all areas of musicology. We have an international profile and welcome applicants with a degree and experience from academic milieus outside Sweden.

The Department now announces a Ph.D. position in musicology aimed at collaboration with the research programme Engaging Vulnerability. This research programme is a decade-long multidisciplinary research program (2015-2025) financed by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) with support from the Vice-Chancellor's strategic funds and the Faculty of Arts at Uppsala University.

Project description: The goal of the program Engaging Vulnerability is to conduct empirical research and develop theoretical perspectives engaging vulnerability as a productive resource rather than as a lack or privation. In the fall of 2018, research within the program will include work in anthropology, musicology, comparative literature, design studies, ethnology, media and communications, film studies, philosophy, government, gender studies, intellectual history and rhetoric. The research programme Engaging Vulnerability is open to musicological dissertation projects on a very broad range of possible research questions and empirical areas. However, the application must explain clearly how the proposed project can contribute to the overall aims of the research programme, and how the project will build on existing competencies and extend the program in vital directions.

Requirements: To qualify for a doctoral position in Musicology at Uppsala University, a candidate should hold a master's degree in Musicology or another discipline relevant to music-related topics. Applicants who have obtained qualifications and degrees equivalent or comparable to that level are also eligible to apply. The doctoral position: Doctoral studies extend over a 4-year period during which the PhD-student will receive a salary as an employee at the department. Local salary rules will apply. Doctoral students are expected to engage in full-time study and research, and participate actively in the department's seminar and other activities. Teaching and/or administrative tasks may be involved, up to a maximum of 20% of full time. The employment will in such cases be prolonged correspondingly. The languages used at the department are Swedish and English.

Application: Should be written in Swedish or English and include:

• A brief cover letter describing yourself, your research interests, why you wish to pursue doctoral studies, and why you think you will be a suitable candidate for the position announced. Be sure to explain specifically why you want to come both to the department of Musicology and the Engaging Vulnerabilty program.
• Degree certificates, relevant transcripts of grades, and dissertations.
• Brief CV, maximum one page, stating qualifications and general research interests.
• A preliminary research plan of less than 18 000 characters (including spaces). The research plan should describe and specify the inquiries or problems that you wish to engage with, and clarify the relevance of the study to previous scholarship. The plan should also include a brief section on possible material and sources for the study, and on methodological and theoretical considerations.
• Publications (if any) and other relevant documents that you wish to have taken into considerance.
• Name and contact details for two referees, or two letters of recommendation.

In the application process the applicant's dissertation on masters level is considered, alongside the research plan, where the applicant describes the proposed topic of the thesis. In the assessment of the research plan, the level of reflection and research questions are considered in relation to previous and current scholarship, as are the possibilities for the applicant to pursue the project successfully.

Criteria for assessment: Only applications with project plans relevant to the research programme Engaging Vulnerability will be considered, and the applicant should specify clearly why he/she wishes to place the project at the department of musicology and to the Engaging vulnerability programme. The applicants will be ranked according to the quality of dissertations and other texts on advanced level, and from the research plan where the applicant outlines his/her planned project. Applicants may also submit published work, which is especially relevant in cases where the applicant holds a degree on advanced level without a dissertation. Interviews may be used in the selection process of applicants.
