Uppsala University, Department of Medical Cell Biology

The Department of Medical Cell Biology at Uppsala University has a strong and international research environment with over 100 scientists, including around 25 PhD students, 20 postdocs and 30 researchers and professors.

Project description: Patients suffering from life-threatening bacterial infections require fast and correct treatment with antibiotics. A complicating factor in this context is that the bacteria sometimes can form biofilms with higher antibiotic resistance relative to planktonic bacteria. Biofilm formation may therefore cause treatment failure. Not so much is known regarding biofilm dynamics and the interactions of different bacterial populations within a biofilm over time.

The successful candidate will in this project be part of a research team developing a method for controlled high-resolution studies of bacterial biofilms. Population dynamics and development of resistance in biofilms will be studied using live-imaging and advanced microscopy. The project involves development of microfluidics-based methods, together with extensive studies of biofilm resistance and biofilm evolution. Associate Prof. Johan Kreuger will be the main supervisor and Prof. Dan I. Andersson co-supervisor. The project will be carried out within Uppsala Antibiotic Center (UAC) that was announced in 2015 to bring together, stimulate and support research addressing important questions regarding antibiotic resistance.

Duties: The successful candidate will engage in research work and doctoral studies. Other duties at the department, i.e. administration and teaching, may be included in the employment up to a maximum level of 20 %.

Requirements: As a candidate for this position, you should have a Master’s degree (MSc) in Molecular Biotechnology Engineering or an equivalent degree. You should be ambitious, productive, and have a passion for science. Personal qualities, ability to work independently and at the same time be able to interact with other researchers both nationally and internationally is very important. Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English according to Uppsala University’s guidelines is required.

To be employed as a PhD student, the applicant must be accepted in the postgraduate program.
