The Department of Modern Languages has around 50 employees who essentially conduct research and education. There are four main research areas: Finno-Ugric languages, German, Romance languages, and Slavic languages. Both earlier and later language stages are studied and the theoretical and methodological scope is wide.

Conditions/Project: Doctoral studies extend over a 4-year period during which the PhD-student will receive a salary as an employee of the department. Doctoral students are expected to engage in full-time study and research, and to participate actively in the department’s activities. Students are encouraged to combine the position with teaching responsibilities up to a maximum of 20 %, which is to be carried out against an appropriate prolongation of the contract. 

Qualifications: For employment as PhD-student it is required that the holder is admitted or will be admitted to the PhD-education. To qualify the applicant must meet the requirements for general and the special eligibility. A general eligibility of 240 ECTS credits is required, 60 of which are obtained at advanced level (= one-year Master’s degree). An applicant may also be considered qualified if s/he has acquired the corresponding competence in other ways. Knowledge of Swedish is not required, but is considered an advantage.

Selection: The selection of candidates will be based on the applicants’ ability to fulfill the education. The review will be take into account the applicants’ submitted records, the quality of the MA thesis (or equivalent) and research proposal, references, relevant experiences, the applicants’ submitted motivation for applying for the position, and interviews.

  2. A CV and a list of academic results which verify general and specific eligibility for the PhD-education.
  3. An authorized copy of your MA degree (or equivalent).
  4. Academic papers from first-cycle and second-cycle levels and/or degree project.
  5. A research proposal which describes the project which the applicant intend to conduct (3–5 pages excluding references).
