Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för teknikvetenskaper

In the subject Engineering Sciences with specialization in Electronics at the Division of Solid State Electronics, Department of Engineering Sciences, the Ångström Laboratory.

Starting date: as soon as possible.

The research aims at exploring a new type of silicon based nano- device as an electronic sensor for detecting charged particles including DNA/RNA strands at extremely low concentrations. The research will be conducted in close collaboration with scientists and engineers in physics and biochemistry.

The research activities will be centred around design, fabrication and characterisation of the novel biosensor devices based on silicon nanostructures. Device fabrication, materials analysis and electrical characterisation will mainly be carried out using Ångström clean-room facilities as well as the state-of-the-art electrical characterisation laboratory of the Division of Solid State Electronics. A major challenge for you is to master the essence of the biochemical processes, as well as their consequences, occurring at the interface between biomolecules (DNA/RNA, etc.) and the silicon sensors.

Successful candidates should have a master degree in science in physics, chemistry, materials science, electrical engineering or equivalent. Curiosity and ambition in learning and solving cross-disciplinary issues is a necessity for success. Strong collaboration spirit and good communication skills in oral and written English are especially required in the multidisciplinary environment set up for the project.

The PhD position is for four years, extendable to a maximum of five years including departmental duties at a level of at most 20% (typically teaching).

Local guidelines for salary placement are used.
