We are looking for a graduate student to the Built Environment Energy Systems Group (BEESG) at the Department of Engineering Sciences. The PhD student will develop and apply state-of-the-art simulation models for probabilistic analysis of electricity distribution grid operation and performance.

The availability of hourly meter data for medium- and low-voltage customers in combination with improved meteorological data from satellites and dense sensor networks has opened up the possibility to significantly improve modeling of both demand and on-site renewable supply in medium and low voltage networks. The aim of this PhD project is to develop statistical models for consumption and generation that take into account stochastic fluctuations in demand as well as spatial smoothing effects (e.g., fluctuations in solar irradiance due to cloud movements), and integrate these into a simulation environment for probabilistic load flow (PLF) analysis of distribution systems.

The project will involve development of probabilistic spatio-temporal load and generation models in distribution grids as well as statistical models for realistic deployment of new technologies in distribution grids, based on market diffusion modeling. Probabilistic load flow simulations of medium and low voltage networks will be performed to estimate hosting capacity for a large number of different grid types, and optimal portfolios of methods to increase hosting capacity for new technologies in different scenarios will be proposed. The PhD student will build on our existing and currently developed models and will work closely together with other members of our research team as well as with international collaborators. The project is performed within the Swedish Centre for Smart Grids and Energy Storage (SweGRIDS) in collaboration with industrial partners.

The candidate must hold an MSc degree in power systems, energy systems or other areas relevant to the PhD topic, preferably combined with a strong background in mathematics and computer simulation. The candidate should also have good collaborative skills as well as independence in their work. Fluency in speaking and writing English is mandatory for the position.
