The Department of English at Uppsala University is an established research community with scholars working in the fields of English Linguistics, English Literature, and American Literature. The department invites applications for a doctoral position in English, specialising either in English Linguistics, English Literature or American Literature. Applications should reach the department no later than 28th May 2018. The position is available from 1 September 2018.

English Linguistics

English language research at the department focuses on the empirical study of past and present variation and development in the language. Among key areas in recent and current research are patterns of structure, meaning and usage in the English language, and variation in such patterns influenced by genre differences or by social factors. Investigations are carried out within frameworks such as variationist studies, (historical) sociolinguistics, (historical) pragmatics, manuscript studies, and language learning. Doctoral students have contributed to the compilation of electronic text resources at the department and joined national and international networks by attending conferences and summer schools and spending periods of time as visiting scholars at universities abroad.

English Literature

Research in English Literature includes all literatures written in English outside of North America from 1500 to the present. Central concerns and foci across this spectrum include: the making and unmaking of Englishness in English literature; the politics of gender and of race in British writing; the global flows and distribution of English Literature (in the times of the British empire and in the post-colonial and trans-national present); modernism, literary ethics and aesthetics. We encourage proposals for research in these broad fields.

American Literature

Research in American Literature and Culture includes all literatures produced on the territory of what is now the United States from colonial times to the present, along with the work of Americans abroad. Some recent and current research areas include globalism, transnationalism, risk humanities, critical finance studies, the environmental and energy humanities, comparative revolutions, and archipelagic American Studies. For this position, we particularly encourage proposals for projects with a broad historical inflection that seek to explicate the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century roots and permutations of current predicaments, from the dilemmas of the risk society and the neoliberal economy, over the ecological crisis, to the new cultural geology of the Anthropocene.

A special entry requirement for admission to the third-cycle study programme in English is that the applicant must have a one-year master degree in English (or an equivalent qualification). Salary: According to local agreement for PhD students.
