The Department of Mathematics conducts research and provides education at undergraduate to graduate level in mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics. The number of employees is 120, of which approximately 30 are doctoral students.
Duties/Project description: Research in the project "Optimally lean neural networks" connected to the WASP graduate school http://wasp-sweden.org/ai-math/ai-math-graduate-school/
The aim of this project is to gain new mathematical knowledge about the intrinsic behaviour of neural networks when subjected to noise. One of the core aims is to develop the mathematical foundation for understanding how the distribution of information carrying capacity for a network's internal weights can be utilized in order to optimize its performance.
The duties of a PhD student are primarily directed at his/her own research education, which lasts four years. The work may also involve, to a limited extent (maximum 20%) other departmental duties, mainly related to teaching undergraduate courses – in which case the position may be extended to maximum five years.
Requirements: In order to be employed as doctoral student, the candidate has to be admitted to the research education program, and for this, his/her potential ability to pursue the program is decisive. The applicant should have a master degree or equivalent which includes a bachelor degree or equivalent in mathematics, applied mathematics or statistics or at least in all likelihood obtain such a degree no later than September 1, 2018. The candidate should have a good command of spoken and written English.

Salary: According to local agreement for PhD students.
