Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences is one of the most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Our courses offer a wide range within the geoscience area and several of the department's programs have received the highest rating in evaluations by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education (Högskoleverket) and the Swedish Higher Education Authority (Universitetskanslersämbetet). For more information, please visit: www.geo.uu.se.

The Programme for Air, Water, and Landscape Science encompasses education and research in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography. More information on the programme for air-water and landscape science can be found at www.geo.uu.se/research/luval/.

Description of research/duties
The wind resource over the sea is generally larger than over land, making offshore localization of wind power attractive. The purpose of the current project is to investigate wind climates over inland seas and coastal areas. Difficulties are found in more accurate assessment of the wind climate over sea due to factors such as how the dynamic wave field should be included in the calculations. Over the inland sea (Baltic Sea), the meteorological conditions for open sea conditions also differ due to the proximity to
land. This may produces effects such as low level jets, which has a major impact on the wind resource. In the project, an in-depth study of these factors for the Baltic Sea is being conducted in order to recommend a best model set-up for wind power-related studies in this region. The employment consists mainly of research. Teaching will be included in the assignments, maximum 20%.
