Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för teknikvetenskaper

The work will be performed at the Division of Solid State Electronics, Department of Engineering Sciences, The Ångström Laboratory. Starting date not later than June 1st, 2018.

The position is full-time for a period of two years

Background: Photovoltaics (solar cells) are a versatile and fast-growing renewable energy technology. The solar cell group at the division for Solid State Electronics is working with fundamental understanding and development of efficient, low-cost photovoltaics based on thin film technology, using the materials Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) and Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CZTS) and alloys thereof.

Project description: A key research area for these materials is the influence of alloying with additional elements on for example defects, doping and band structure. In CZTS, controlled introduction of depth-wise bandgap gradients via alloying is a key challenge, and in CIGS, interface control by alloying with alkali metals is critical for high performance. To get insight into the fundamental effects, theory approaches are increasingly important. As part of a SSF funded project, we are seeking a postdoc to carry out first-principles calculations on a number of alloy systems of CIGS and CZTS. We will consider phenomena such as crystalline structure and phase stability, band-edge structure and defect characteristics, and light absorption, using (but not limited to) atomistic computational methods based on the density functional theory (DFT). It is also of interest to study dynamic phenomena such as cation/anion diffusion.

To promote a good dialog between the theoretical and experimental components of the project, the work will be carried out within the thin film solar cell group at the Ångström laboratory. Theoretical support and a theory research environment will be provided from collaborators in the project at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm as well as the Materials Theory Group at the Ångström Laboratory.

Qualification requirements: To be eligible for employment as a post-doctoral researcher, your PhD (or equivalent) must have been awarded at most three years before the closing date for this application. In some circumstances (for example parental leave, periods of illness or certain other cases), this period may be extended.

You should be a motivated and well-organised researcher with a background and a strong interest in materials for solar cells and modelling of solar cell devices. A PhD in Physics or Materials Science, focused on theoretical understanding is expected. Experience with the above-named materials is also anticipated. You shall have a scientific background in condensed matter theory, and strong experience in modeling and analysis of the electronic band structure of such materials using sophisticated DFT based program packages.  You shall also have experience in the defect physics of the relevant materials.

Previous experience with combining results from DFT calculations with experimental results is advantageous, as well as programming skills. The project will require a candidate who can operate independently when needed, and can demonstrate good communication and planning skills. A constructive and collaborative attitude is a requirement, as is mastery of oral and written English.

Applications should include a CV and list of publications, University transcripts of education, Ph.D. thesis and other relevant publications (submitted or accepted); names, mail and e-mail addresses of two referees; and a letter (ca. two pages) stating the applicant’s motivation, interest and relevant experience for this project.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
