Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för kemi - Ångström

Department of Chemistry - Ångström Laboratory conducts research and education in chemistry. The Department has over 300 active persons, of which 200 are employees and the rest consists of guest researchers and students doing research at Master level. Annual turnover is just over 200 million SEK. For more information, visit the Chemistry Ångström's website

The Polymer Chemistry Division is part of the Department of Chemistry - Ångström Laboratory and is devoted to design new polymer biomaterials to trigger desired biological responses with the aim of resolving clinically relevant questions. Special emphasis is given to tissue regeneration and drug delivery where new materials are synthesized and evaluated in vitro and in vivo.

Duties: The researcher is expected to contribute to design and synthesize a novel generation of functional polymeric biomaterials based on natural polymers and bioactive molecules by different routes: irreversible chemical grafting, cross-linking and electrostatic interactions. The objective is to assess and optimize their physicochemical, optical and biological properties for tissue protection and regeneration.

Requirements: To be eligible for the research employment, the candidate must hold a PhD degree in Polymer Chemistry, Biomaterials or similar disciplines, and a large part of the applicant PhD project should have been focused on unfunctionalized biopolymers for biomedical applications. Extensive experience in experimental research in biopolymers, in particular chitosan and hyaluronic acid, polymers characterization, analytical methods, confocal microscopy, cytotoxicity assays (MTT and MTS), and 2D and 3D cell culture systems is required. The ranking will also accord weight to the candidates assessed competence in ability to interact effectively in a multi-disciplinary research environment. The applicant must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Application procedure: The application should include a CV, copy of PhD thesis certificate and other possible documents the applicant wishes to include. A motivation letter describing the applicant’s previous research experience and how it is related to the present position (one, or maximum two, pages) is also required.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
