Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University, Sweden invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral position in experimental particle physics, starting August 1, 2018 or as agreed upon.

Duties and project description: The successful candidate will work on physics analysis using data from the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, searching for evidence of new physical phenomena such as top partners in the form of vector-like quarks.

The project is part of a larger network funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation that has financed the project "Solving the Higgs Fine-Tuning Problem with Top Partners", with participation from Stockholm University, Chalmers University (Gothenburg) and Uppsala University. It is a novel collaboration between ATLAS experimentalists and particle physics theorists, aiming at producing new models of physics beyond the Standard Model as well as new search strategies for such models. There is also a larger international community of collaborators in Europe and elsewhere that will take part in these activities. Participating senior scientists include the experimentalists S. Strandberg (P.I of the project), J. Sjölin and D. Milstead at Stockholm University, as well as the theorists R. Enberg at Uppsala University and G. Ferretti at Chalmers. Funds are allocated for traveling to conferences and collaboration meetings.

The successful candidate is expected to co-supervise students within the project, and collaborate with scientists from the partner universities. Working with data from the ATLAS experiment means becoming an ATLAS author, which will require significant service work during the first year of employment, if the selected candidate is not already an author, and continued maintenance and operations work for the duration of the project.

Requirements: The candidate must have a doctoral degree in physics or equivalent. Previous experience with experiments or phenomenology at colliders such as the LHC or the Tevatron, or a similar background, is required. Since the project is a close collaboration between theory and experiment, a background in both fields is a merit, as well as experience from working with models involving vector-like quarks or composite Higgs. The PhD degree should preferably not be older than three years but exceptions are possible. Proficiency in written and spoken English is necessary.

Employment conditions: The successful candidate will be employed on a two-year appointment, including benefits.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
