Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för kirurgiska vetenskaper

The Department of Surgical Sciences (IKV) has some 120 employees and more than 200 registered doctoral students, most of whom are engaged in clinical work as physicians and nurses. The annual turnover is SEK 135 million. Part of the Disciplinary Domain for Medicine and Pharmacy, IKV conducts teaching at basic level (undergraduate, Bachelor or first cycle, including some professional degrees), advanced level (Master or second cycle, including other professional degrees) and research level (third cycle), and also research. The teaching takes place in various programmes, including the Medicine, Nursing and Specialist Nursing Programmes. The research is carried out in research groups in the Department. A great deal of research takes place in collaboration among different research groups at Uppsala University and with other universities both in and outside Sweden. Many of the Department’s employees hold posts that are combined with positions at Uppsala University Hospital.

We are looking for a professor of caring sciences combined with a position as a specialist nurse at Uppsala University Hospital. The nursing research conducted at the Department is mainly carried out in a high-tech environment. The term “high-tech environment” refers to such units as intensive care wards and specialities like anaesthetic nursing, intensive care or theatre care.

Work duties

The overarching purpose of this recruitment is for it to be part of a strategic effort to strengthen the Department’s research in this area of nursing. Nursing in a high-tech environment is an area that includes both theoretical and applied research. The research may address theories, nursing procedures and processes, organisation, techniques and technologies, therapeutic methods, patient perspectives, the care environment, patient safety and issues of the work environment in the context of a high-tech environment. The work duties include teaching, research and administration. Included in the sphere of teaching are the roles of course director or coordinator, course administrator and supervisor of doctoral students. Also included in the position is the duty to follow development in the holder’s own subject, and in the development of society in general, and to disseminate research results to the community at large. Another work duty is to engage in strategic work at the interface of research, clinical practice and education, in collaboration with the clinic. One-third of the appointment consists in clinical work as a specialist nurse at Uppsala University Hospital.

Qualifications/eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a professor, the applicant must have shown both research and teaching expertise (Swedish Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4, Section 3). Under the Appointment Regulations for Uppsala University, a general eligibility requirement for teachers is for them to have the personal characteristics required to perform the duties of the post well. Research expertise must have been demonstrated by means of independent research contributions and by the consistently high international and national quality of the applicant’s work. The applicant must have shown expertise in planning, initiating, leading and developing research; a capacity to acquire funding for research in competition; and well-documented skill in supervising students at research (third-cycle) level. The applicant’s contributions to the international and national scientific community will be assessed according to criteria including quality and the scope of academic publications in the publishing channels most relevant to the subject concerned. International qualification requirements must be assessed with reference to the nature and specific conditions of the subject.

Teaching expertise must have been demonstrated by educational and teaching qualifications. In addition, the applicant must demonstrate well-documented expertise in supervision in the first, second and third cycles. A precondition for the applicant being deemed to have teaching expertise is completion of teacher training for higher education, relevant to the work concerned, comprising at least ten weeks, or corresponding knowledge. If special reasons apply, this academic teacher training may be implemented during the appointee’s first two years of employment. The education must include training in third-cycle supervision.

Eligibility for this appointment requires training as a specialist nurse in one of the following areas: anaesthetic nursing, intensive care or theatre care.

To be eligible for this appointment, the applicant is also required to be a Registered General Nurse with a licence from the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare. If the applicant does not possess this qualification and licence, the applicant must have submitted an application for the same to the Board not later than on the closing date for applications for the appointment in question.

The applicant must have a documented ability to teach in Swedish and English. If special reasons apply, a person who does not have an ability to teach in Swedish may be required to acquire this ability within two years.

Assessment criteria

In assessment of more than one eligible applicant, most weight will be assigned to research expertise, followed by teaching expertise. Balancing of assessment criteria will nevertheless take place so that an applicant who is judged to be much more skilful in terms of teaching than another who is slightly more skilful in terms of research may be ranked above the latter. Clinical expertise is also significant for the appointment and weight will also be assigned to this qualification.

In assessment of research expertise, scholarly quality will be the primary consideration. The scope of the applicant’s research, especially in terms of breadth and depth, will also be regarded as important. Furthermore, consideration will be given to the applicant’s ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and education in the third cycle; capacity to acquire funding for research in competition; and demonstrated ability to interact with others both within academia and in the wider community. See also Guidelines and assessment criteria for recruiting and promoting teachers at the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy (RB), § 3.

In assessment of teaching expertise, teaching quality will be the primary consideration. The scope of the applicant’s teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, will also be given consideration. Furthermore, weight will be assigned to the applicant’s capacity to plan, initiate, lead and develop teaching and instruction, and ability to connect research with teaching on the basis of research in the subject concerned, subject didactics and teaching and learning in higher education. Ability to interact with stakeholders inside and outside the University concerning issues of teaching and learning in higher education is also included in teaching expertise. See also RB § 4.

Clinical expertise is demonstrated through clinical work and clinical training, and also participation in clinical development. Clinical development includes contributions that have improved or rationalised health care and medical care.

When the University appoints new teachers, the applicants selected are those who, after qualitative all-round assessment of their proficiency and expertise, are deemed to have the best prospects of implementing and developing the work duties in question and of contributing to positive development of activities.

Assessment criteria: other expertise

Management expertise and administrative expertise are important for the appointment and weight will be assigned to them. Ability to engage in cooperation with the community at large, and also to convey information about research and development work, will be taken into consideration.

Management expertise is demonstrated through ability to lead activities and staff, take decisions, assume responsibility, motivate others and provide them with what they require for efficient achievement of common goals. Ability to coordinate a group and to help generate a sense of commitment, enhance participation and enjoyment of work, and ability to deal with conflicts, are further examples of how expertise is demonstrated. See also RB § 5.

According to the Appointment Regulations, administrative expertise is demonstrated, for example, through the capacity to plan, organise and prioritise work in an efficient way adjusted to circumstances, and also through the ability to specify and observe time frames. This form of expertise includes overall work planning; ability to manage resources in a way that reflects operational priorities; and ability to work in a structured manner and on the basis of an awareness of goals and quality. Se also RB § 5.

According to RB § 6: In assessment of collaboration expertise, weight is assigned to experience of and expertise in scientific popularisation, editorship and other activities related to knowledge exchange between universities and the surrounding world, and also experience of innovation and entrepreneurship.

The gender-equality aspect will be applied if an all-round qualitative assessment shows that two applicants of different genders have equivalent or virtually equivalent qualifications.

An applicant’s parental leave, part-time work due to care of children or similar activities will be regarded as qualifying work experience.
