Uppsala universitet, Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences is one of the most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Our courses offer a wide range within the geoscience area and several of the department's programs have received the highest rating in evaluations by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education (Högskoleverket) and the Swedish Higher Education Authority(Universitetskanslersämbetet). Within the framework of a recently granted ERC project (HydroSocial Extremes), we are announcing a research position. The project aims to unravel the interactions between hydrological extremes (floods and droughts) and society. The researcher will be placed at Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences, Programme for Air, Water and Landscape Sciences.

The Programme for Air, Water, and Landscape Science (LUVAL) encompasses education and research in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography. More information on the programme for air-water and landscape science can be found at www.geo.uu.se/research/luval/.

Duties/Project description: Human societies strongly rely on access to water resources, which are essential to support livelihoods and provide favourable conditions for sustainable development. While benefiting from water services and struggling with water-related disasters (floods and droughts), humans also alter the hydrological regime by building dams, canals, levees, etc. The purpose of this project is to understand the dynamic relationships between water and people by exploring how societies change the hydrological regime while, at the same time, hydrological changes simultaneously shape societies. This work will aim to improve our understanding of human-water interactions, and the dynamics emerging from the feedbacks between hydrological and social processes. The study will be part of HydroSocialExtremes, an ERC project that aims to unravel the interactions between hydrological extremes (floods and droughts) and society. The work will also be carried out in support of three strategic research goals of the department: natural hazards, climate and sustainable development.

Requirements:
A PhD in hydrology, geography, water resources engineering or similar studies is required. Experience of work with modelling and programming skills are merits for this position.

In filling this position, the university aims at recruiting a person who, in a combined evaluation of competence, skills and documented qualifications, is judged most suitable to carry out and develop the project. The applicant must be proficient in spoken and written English.
