1 PhD position in History of Science and Ideas - Hiring in process/Finished, not possible to apply

The Department of History of Science and Ideas is a dynamic research environment, with a particular emphasis on history of science, history of medicine, intellectual history, media history and political history, see http://www.idehist.uu.se. The department now announces a fully funded position where the holder will be an active member of the Engaging Vulnerability (EV) research program at Uppsala University.

EV is a decade-long multidisciplinary research program (2015–2025) financed by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) with support from the Vice-Chancellor’s strategic funds and the Faculty of Arts at Uppsala University. The goal of the program is to conduct empirical research and develop theoretical perspectives engaging vulnerability as a productive resource rather than as a lack or privation. In the fall of 2018, research within the program will include work in anthropology, comparative literature, design studies, ethnology, media and communications, film studies, philosophy, government, gender studies, intellectual history and rhetoric.  Information about the program can be found at http://www.engagingvulnerability.se

The EV-program open up for dissertation projects on a very broad range of possible research questions and empirical areas. However, the application must explain clearly how the proposed project can contribute to the overall aims of the EV-program.

Qualifications: To be eligible the applicant must have a Master’s Degree in the humanities or social sciences relevant to research in history of science and ideas. We encourage applicants from all countries to apply and the dissertation is written in English. Swedish reading and listening comprehension is expected within two years.

Please note that admission to a PhD programme at Uppsala University is highly competitive and that a Master’s Degree at the time of application is a prerequisite.

Position: Successful candidates will pursue their doctoral studies full-time in Uppsala and are expected to participate actively in weekly seminars and workshops, etc. at the department and within the research programme.

The position is a 4-year full-time employment (starting salary is currently 26 100 SEK/month) which qualifies for all Swedish social benefits, such as paid parental leave. The position might also entail teaching and other assignments up to 20% of the full-time position (extending the position proportionally).

Application: Your application can be written in English or Swedish and should include: 1) a brief CV, outlining your academic progress to date, 2) a copy of your MA thesis, 3) a statement (of no more than 1500 words) outlining your proposed research. This outline should describe your research question, how it is related to the current state of research and its relevance to the EV-programme. The outline should also have a short discussion of possible sources for answering your question and methodological considerations regarding the potential of these sources, 4) an authorized copy of your Master’s degree and course grades, 5) name and e-mail addresses of at least two referees.
