Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för cell- och molekylärbiologi

At the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology.

The position is with the research group of Johan Elf and is part of a KAW funded project that aims to map the physical principles for how proteins search for specific sequences in the genome or transcriptome. The project is an interdisciplinary collaboration of researchers in biology, engineering and physics and you will work closely with several of these groups (http://elflab.icm.uu.se/kaw/agile).

Project description: We are recruiting a postdoc interested in developing, building and using frontline optical methods for studying biophysics and intracellular kinetics at high spatial and temporal resolution. The position is focused on the optical techniques and you should be comfortable designing and building complicated microscopy set-ups. The project specifically aims at implementing novel methods, including the continued development of the MINFLUX system, for tracking individual florescent molecules on the µ-second time scale.

We offer a stimulating interdisciplinary environment and you will interact closely with a competent team of engineers, physicists, programmers, microbiologist, chemists and molecular biologists solving puzzles related to central aspects of life at the molecular level. For more information about our research, please visit http://elflab.icm.uu.se/. The project is a collaboration with the Hell group in Göttingen.

Qualifications required:

  • PhD degree* in relevant subject area, e.g. experimental physics, electrical engineering, biophysics.
  • Self-motivated personality with interest in fundamental science or methods development.
  • Documented experience in designing and building optical measurement systems or microscopes.
  • Excellent team working skills.
  • Excellent communication skills in English.

Qualification desired:

  • Experience in LabView and ideally also FPGA programming.
  • Experience in electrical engineering and hardware integration.
  • Documented experience of solving complex scientific problems and methods development.

Application should include:

  • CV including a list of publications.
  • Cover letter (maximum 1 page)
  • Copy of official academic transcripts.
  • Names, e-mail addresses, and telephone numbers for three reference persons.

To be considered for this position, the candidate must have obtained his or her PhD degree no more than three years before the end of the application period. If there are special circumstances, e.g. parental leave or military service, exemptions can be made.
