Uppsala University hereby declares the following position, at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, starting July 2018, to be open for application: PhD student position in Physics, bionanomaterials directed towards Molecular Interactions.

Duties/Project description:
Nanobiomaterials are constantly gaining huge attention because they are going to exhibit important roles in the direction of biomedical engineering field including advanced energy, self-powered electronics, sensing, and imaging etc. In such applications, materials interactions with biological identities play very important roles and to understand the involved mechanisms, detailed knowledge of physics, chemistry and biology and engineering is simultaneously required. The ultimate goal is to develop a detailed understanding about structure-property relationship of biologically-engineered nanomaterial systems using experimental facilities as well computational bioinformatics approached. One can also expect that completely new applications areas will appear with respect to growth of research field.

In a recently granted VR project ‘Stimuli-enabled energy materials for smart bioelectronic devices’ at Uppsala University (PI- Prof. Rajeev Ahuja) jointly with Kiel University, Germany (Co-PI: PD Dr. Yogendra Kumar Mishra), different bionanomaterials based hybrid systems will be experimentally developed and will be characterized in detail using various advanced techniques. In parallel, fundamental material-biomolecular interactions will be simulated using molecular dynamics under various conditions. A comparison and optimization of experimental results together with molecular interactions studies among different nanomaterials and biological identities will be established.  

One PhD student position in the group of Prof. Rajeev Ahuja at the Department of Physics and Materials Science. The project will involve nano-bio-molecular interactions using computational studies. Through density functional theory, one can rapidly model series of potential candidates to be suitable as molecular interactions, and subsequently focus on the synthesis and later experimental efforts on the most promising nano-biomoleculer hybrid systems. Experimental studies will also feed back information to the computations as they can be used to resolve questions from experiment and thus provide a deeper knowledge of the interaction processes.

Requirements:
The successful PhD student candidate should have a master of science in physics/chemistry/bioinformatics or the equivalent. He/she must have (i) a solid experience in bioinformatics, biophysics, nanobiomaterials, chemistry, and biotechnology (ii) documented good knowledge in computer languages like R and Unix (iii) documented interest in computational biophysics/materials science. In addition to a good background in these science areas, good skills in oral and written English are also required. An ability and desire of the candidate to work in a multidisciplinary and visionary environment is very crucial. Preference will be given to the candidate who has already published some papers in the field of nanobiomaterials. Since the project will be jointly carried out at Uppsala and Kiel Universities, candidates must be prepared for frequent travels between both cities.

Application:
The PhD study position corresponds to four years of full time studies, with courses of appr. 1 year and 3 years of research work. A tentative starting date is July/August 2018.
