Uppsala universitet, Department of Earth Sciences

Postdoc in Natural hazards (Geophysics)

The Department of Earth Sciences of Uppsala University is one of the most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Our courses offer a wide range within the geoscience area and several of the department's programs have received the highest rating in evaluations by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education (Högskoleverket) and the Swedish Higher Education Authority (Universitetskanslersämbetet). Please visit: www.geo.uu.se for more information about the department.

The Centre of Natural Hazard and Disaster Science (CNDS) is a research center that brings together social, engineering and earth scientists from different departments at Uppsala University, Swedish Defense University, and Karlstad University. The research conducted at CNDS aims to improve the ability to prevent and deal with natural hazards and disasters. For more information see www.cnds.se.

The Department of Earth Sciences, Uppsala University, which is affiliated to CNDS, is recruiting two postdocs who will focus on natural hazards. One postdoc will work at the Geophysics Programme (www.geo.uu.se/research/geophysics/), while a second postdoc will work at the programme for Air, Water and Landscape Sciences (www.geo.uu.se/research/luval/).

The two postdocs will contribute to the Department’s strategic research area of Natural Hazards. This theme deals with the drivers, processes and consequences of extreme events of natural origins, such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, storms, floods, droughts, and landslides. CNDS’s scope extends from natural hazards, to their impact on physical infrastructure and society and disaster mitigation actions, including contacts with public authorities and industry. Current areas of focus include assessment of natural hazards individually and in combination (multi-hazards), triggered hazard events (e.g. earthquake stimulated landslides or dam failures leading to flooding) and cascading consequences for society.

Duties:
The geophysics postdoc is expected to contribute to development of new methods or models for a better understanding of complex natural hazards, including cascading events, and interplay between hazards individually and in combination with physical infrastructure and society’s disaster response and mitigation actions (vulnerability).

Requirements:
A PhD in Geophysics or similar is required. The applicant must be proficient in spoken and written English.

To qualify for a post-doctoral position you must have a PhD or a corresponding degree. The applicant's Ph.D. degree must have been obtained less than 3 years before the application date. However, periods such as sick leave or parental leave can be added to the 3-year period.

Additional qualifications:
Experience with geophysical hazard assessment is a strong merit, as are appropriate modelling and computing skills. The ranking will also accord weight to the candidates assessed competence in understanding and quantifying the risk to society from geophysical hazards, and ability to interact effectively in a multi-disciplinary research environment.

How to apply:
The application should include a CV, copies of the examination certificates, PhD thesis and other possible documents the applicant wishes to include. In addition, a description of applicant’s previous research experience and how it is related to the present position, should be included (maximum 2 pages). Application must be submitted digitally, via the University’s reqruitment system.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. Striving to achieve a more even gender balance, women are especially encouraged to apply for this position.
