Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för geovetenskaper

The Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University is one of the largest and scientifically broadest Earth Science Department in Sweden and includes research programmes in Mineralogy, petrology and tectonics, Geophysics, Palaeobiology, Hydrogeology, Meteorology and Natural resource science.

Duties/Project description: CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) is an instrumental method for reducing atmospheric emissions of greenhouse gases and an integral part of global energy and climate policy. In this project we will address one of the main CO2 trapping mechanisms, the residual trapping and its scale dependence, i.e. how the estimate of residual trapping varies with the scale of observation. Experimental and model analyses are being carried out over the entire range of scales; (i) the field scale, where extensively monitored CO2 injection experiments have been carried at Heletz experimental field site, as part of EU project TRUST; (ii) The laboratory scale, where experiments with anologue fluids provide direct observation of the effect of heterogeneity, and  (iii) the pore and core scale, where experimental results on core samples along with pore network modeling provide an understanding on how the pore-scale trapping in different rocks can be. The ultimate objective is a unified model of residual trapping over the range of scales allowing an interpretation of field tests aimed at quantifying the sites’ capacity for residual trapping. The work of the PhD student will mainly be analysis and modeling of the experimental results, while a large part of the experimental work has been carried out by other researchers. Certain amount of experimental work in the laboratory/in the field will also be included to the doctoral project. For more information concerning the research group see
