Uppsala University, Department of Neuroscience

At the Department of Neuroscience, we are working hard to increase our knowledge and insights into this area as well as into large areas of our musculoskeletal system and its disorders. A major objective with our research is to develop novel strategies to prevent and treat diseases and injuries in the nervous system and musculoskeletal system. By participating in different educational programs and courses, scientists at the Department communicate their knowledge to a wide range of future professional specialists – for example nurses, physicians, physiotherapists, speech pathologists and biomedical researchers.

Duties/Project description: Our laboratory is interested in understanding how nerve cells, neurons, communicate within neuronal networks, and how these networks control our behaviour. We aim at increasing the understanding of how these networks function and to elucidate the role of specific neuronal subpoulations involved in sensory signalling. We are primarily aimed at high quality basic science but have the subsequent goal to better understand how specific neurons are involved in neurological disease or damage, such as persistent pain and itch. Our research is interdisciplinary and integrates molecular biology, biochemistry, cell-biology, mouse genetics, electrophysiology, viral tracing and optogenetics. We seek one PhD student for studies of neuronal networks in the central and peripheral nervous system. Please visit our website at http://www.neuro.uu.se/research/developmental+genetics/sensory-circuits/

Requirements: Applications are invited from highly motivated candidates with a Master of Science degree. You will be expected to teach in English and Swedish, for at most 20% of the time. The applicant should have a substantial interest in neurobiology, with particular knowledge in mouse genetics, neurobiology, molecular biology, micro surgery and cell dissociation. The applicant should also be qualified to work with animals (FELASA B or C certificate).

In order to be eligible you will have to be registered as a Ph.D. student. The rules governing this process can be found (in Swedish) in Högskoleförordningen 5 kap 1-7 §§. Local rules apply for salaries.

Application: Rules governing Ph.D. candidates are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala university's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/search/?hits=30&languageId=1&search-language_en=English
