PhD student in electric vehicle smart charging in the built environment - Hiring in process/Finished, not possible to apply

We are looking for a graduate student to our Electric Transport Group (ETG), in association with the Built Environment Energy Systems Group (BEESG), at the Department of Engineering Sciences. The PhD project will investigate the potential for electric vehicle smart charging in the built environment.

Electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids increase worldwide and will become increasingly common in a near future. This requires an infrastructure for electric vehicle charging, and this infrastructure must be adopted for future smart grids which also include intermittent power sources such as distributed photovoltaics. The user-optimization and design of this infrastructure is a challenge which needs to be investigated in detail, in particular it has to be connected to existing and future technology.

The work will primarily be based on mathematical modelling of electric vehicle charging, and how this interacts with both the vehicle and the surrounding electricity system, including other loads. In particular, the project will focus on so-called smart charging of electric vehicles, where matching with local power generation such as photovoltaic power generation will be part. This project will in part be a collaboration with the Swedish Electromobility Centre.

The candidate must hold an MSc degree in power systems or other areas relevant to the PhD topic, preferably with a strong mathematical and data analysis background. The data analysis and modelling for this project is primarily made in Matlab. The candidate should also have good collaborative skills as well as independence in their work. Fluency in speaking and writing English is mandatory for the position.
