Uppsala University, Department of Public Health and Caring Sciences

The laboratory of Molecular Geriatrics is situated at Rudbeck laboratory and is closely connected to the clinical activity of the memory unit at the University hospital. Our research is focusing on cellular and molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases and is performed in collaboration with national and international research groups and biomedical companies.

Project description: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD) are common neurodegenerative diseases, involving much suffering for the patients and their families. Knowledge about the cellular mechanisms behind the initiation and spreading of AD and PD is still very limited. Decades of research have focused on neuronal abnormalities during the disease progression, but recently more and more attention has been given to glial cells. Being the most numerous glial cell type, astrocytes have great impact on the brain environment and may constitute a very potent treatment target. The overall aim with our research is to clarify the involvement of astrocytes in AD and PD initiation and progression and to investigate their therapeutic potential. The project will mostly be focused on studies of advanced cell culture systems, but will also include studies of animal models and analysis of patient material.

Prerequisites: The holder of a position as postdoctoral researcher must have a PhD degree or equivalent. The PhD degree should have been obtained at the start of the employment and no more than three years prior to the application deadline; however, periods of e.g. sick leave or parental leave are not counted.

The applicant should:

- have a doctoral degree in neurobiology, biomedicine, cell biology or a closely related subject.

- be scientifically skilled, as shown by scientific publications and presentations at national and international conferences.

- be fluent in English, spoken and written.

Additional qualifications: We are searching for an enthusiastic, ambitious and talented researcher with a genuine curiosity in solving scientific problems and with the analytical abilities needed to critically evaluate experimental data. It is essential that the applicant is able to work independently to formulate and design experiments, but good collaboration skills are also very important. Experience of working with cultured astrocytes and neurons, as well as working with animal models for neurodegenerative diseases is qualifying. Immunohistochemistry, immunocytochemistry, microscopy techniques, western blot, stereotaxic surgery and animal handling experience is of advantage.

Application: The application should contain a letter describing the applicant’s qualifications and research interests, CV, copies of relevant degrees and contact information for at least two references. The applications will be assessed based on eligibility requirements, achievements in related research areas and personal suitability.  Uppsala University aims for gender balance and diversity in all activities in order to achieve a higher quality at all levels of the organization. We therefore welcome applicants of any gender and with different birth background, functionality and life experience.
