Uppsala University, Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics conducts research and provides education at undergraduate to graduate level in mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics. The number of employees is 120, of which approximately 30 are doctoral students.

Duties: The duties of a PhD student are primarily directed at his/her own research education, which lasts four years. The work may also involve, to a limited extent (maximum 20%) other departmental duties, mainly related to teaching undergraduate courses – in which case the position may be extended to maximum five years.

The PhD positions are within a project "Random Structures and Algorithms". The general area is probability theory, especially combinatorial probability, random graphs, percolation theory, random networks, sequential analysis and sorting algorithms under uncertainty.

Requirements: In order to be employed as doctoral student, the candidate has to be admitted to the research education program, and for this, his/her potential ability to pursue the program is decisive. The applicant should have a master degree or equivalent which includes a bachelor degree or equivalent in mathematics or at least in all likelihood obtain such a degree no later than September 1, 2018. The applicant should have a good command of spoken and written English.

Application: A complete application should include a short and concise description of research interests, previous experiences and future expectations, Curriculum Vitae, copies of diplomas and certificates of grades, a copy of master´s degree dissertation (or a preliminary outline thereof) and contact details of up to three referees. We do not want any letters of recommendation.
