Uppsala University invites candidates for the following positions at the Swedish Institute for North American Studies (SINAS).

1-2 researchers at the Swedish Institute for North American Studies 50 % of full time, between 1 September 2018 and 28 February 2019.

SINAS is an interdisciplinary institute for research in North American Studies, especially the United States. The institute is a section within the Department of English, which includes research and teaching in American literature. Each year, SINAS also hosts a Distinguished Fulbright Professor of American Studies through the Swedish Fulbright Commission.

We study American society, history, and culture from broad perspectives in the humanities and social sciences. Our current research profile focuses on trans-Atlantic and inter-American studies.  See www.engelska.uu.se/sinas-en/research/ for a more detailed presentation.

Job duties: The job duties primarily include research, which should result in an application for external research funding by the end of the employment. The research project will be placed at SINAS and should be linked to the SINAS profile areas. The project may include researchers from different disciplines.

Some research administrative duties may also be included. Successful applicants are expected to take an active part in the activities at SINAS, contribute to the development of its research, and to be a part of the larger community in the Department of English.

Job qualifications: A Ph.D. degree or equivalent is required to be employed as a researcher. We are looking for researchers from different disciplinary backgrounds who have an interest in the research environment at SINAS.  

Assessment criteria: In selecting among eligible applicants, emphasis will be placed on research, especially on the ability to initiate and carry out research that is relevant to the SINAS research profile. The proposed research project will be of great significance, and special attention will be paid to a documented ability of cooperation.  

In recruiting for this position, Uppsala University will primarily consider the applicant who in the overall assessment of competence and expertise is judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties within the position as well as contribute to a positive development of SINAS’ activities.

The application should include a short CV, project plan (2-3 pages), a statement on why the applicant wishes to do research at SINAS, the three most important publications and other materials that the applicant wishes to include. Interviews may be used and the applicant should submit a list of reference persons who can speak to the applicant’s suitability for the position.
