Institutionen för Geovetenskaper

The position is placed at the programme for Air, Water and Landscape Sciences.

Duties/Project description
Sweden is located in a climate zone where snow and ice generally is expected during parts of the year. Thus it is not surprising that icing will occur winter-time and may affect infrastructures, for example wind power plants. This causes problems in operation and is seen as reduced power production and increased loads on the wind turbine.

A general goal for the project is to refine the meteorological methods for estimating icing and production losses. In the project methods will be developed making it possible to judge and quantify uncertainties in the ice estimations based upon the relevant processes. In the project, it will be examined how local effects such as snow properties and physiography affect ice-related wind power losses. These effects will be included in an ensemble-based forecast The PhD student will in the research work intimately together with researchers both at Uppsala University and at SMHI (Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute).
