The Department of Information Technology is opening two PhD student positions for highly motivated individuals interested in conducting outstanding research in the area of security for in-body sensor networks.

Project description: More and more people all over the world are relying on implanted medical devices such as pacemakers for life-critical functions. New application areas for implanted medical devices such as drug delivery systems, intracranial pressure monitoring devices and artificial kidneys are emerging.

A further trend is to network these implanted devices which is necessary since more and more, in particular elderly, people have multiple diseases that can benefit from implanted devices.

Uppsala University has recently pioneered on new approach for in-body communication: we have shown that the human body’s adipose (fat) tissue can be used as a communication channel for RF-based communication.

While offering exciting opportunities for future health care, implanted devices need to be effectively secured in order to avoid horrible and life-threatening scenarios where attackers control implanted devices such as pacemakers or insuline pumps. The task of this project is to secure in-body networks of implanted devices, protect privacy of the patients and to secure communication between in-body networks and the outside world.

Requirements: The candidate should have a Master of Science in computer engineering, electrical engineering or equivalent, ideally with a strong background in security, low-level software and wireless communication. Experience with developing sensor node hardware is a plus.

The position is for at most five years, and includes department duties (mainly teaching) at a level of at most 20%, as well as course participation. Good English communication skills, both spoken and written, are required.

Application:  The application should include a description of yourself, your research interests, reasons for applying for this particular PhD position and past experience (max.3 pages), a CV, copies of relevant university degrees and transcripts, relevant publications, a copy of your MSc thesis (or a summary in case the thesis is ongoing) and other relevant documents.
