Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för fysik och astronomi

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is the second largest at Uppsala University with more than 360 employees and 10 different divisions and is situated at the Ångström Laboratory. Webpage: http://www.physics.uu.se

Description of the subject:

The research will be conducted at the Division of Molecular and Condensed Matter Physics at the Department of Physics and Astronomy. The research within the division is based on experimental studies of the electronic structure and magnetic properties of molecular and condensed matter systems. The main experimental methods are based on X-rays, in particular photoelectron spectroscopy, resonant inelastic X-ray scattering and X-ray magnetic dichroism.

The research focuses on the electronic and magnetic properties of two-dimensional materials ranging from skyrmions systems to organometallic compounds. High-resolution X-ray based spectroscopies as well as neutron scattering will be used to investigate the physical properties of these compounds. In addition, thin-film growth using the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique will be included.

Build-up of activities at synchrotron radiation and neutron facilities such as BESSY II in Berlin, MAX IV and ESS in Lund will be central. The research is part of a collaboration between Uppsala University and KTH directed towards studies and synthesis of quantum materials and the implementation of neutron scattering techniques.

Eligibility: The applicant is expected to have a PhD in Physics. Priority shall be given to applicants who has obtained their doctoral degree or achieved equivalent competence at most seven years prior to the end of the application period. According to the Appointment Regulations a general eligibility requirement is that the applicant must have the personal characteristics required to perform the duties of the post well. Applicants should have a documented ability to teach in English or Swedish, unless there are special reasons. The holder is expected to teach in Swedish within two years.

Assessment criteria Scientific and pedagogical skills:

The ranking of eligible applicants will be based primarily on research expertise, and thereafter on teaching expertise. In assessing research expertise special weight will be attached to solid-state physics, electron spectroscopy, especially angle- and time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and neutron scattering. Furthermore, the candidate should be familiar with UHV equipment and sample synthesis such as thin-films growth using PLD or similar technique. The ability to attract support in terms of beamtimes and/or external funding as well as the demonstrated capacity to interact with others both within academia and in the wider community is of great value.

In filling this position the University aims to appoint the applicant who, following a qualitative holistic assessment of her/his competence and expertise, is judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to help advance operations.

Personal conditions, such as parental leave, that in the assessment may be credited to the applicant should be stated in the application. Parental leave, part-time work relating to care of children, union assignments, military service, or the like will be regarded as work experience.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
