Senior lecturer in Iranian languages, especially Kurdish

At the Department of Linguistics and Philology, Uppsala University 

Research and teaching at the Department of linguistics and philology covers approx. twenty different languages and linguistic subjects as well as computational linguistics. These include many of the important languages and cultures in the Middle East, to which can be added Hindi, Swahili, Chinese, Ancient Greek and Latin. Comparative Indo-European linguistics and general linguistics are also part of the department.

Duties: The employment includes teaching Iranian languages, particularly Kurdish, on undergraduate and master levels. Teaching of other Iranian languages can also apply. The duties include teaching incl. responsibility for, and administration of courses, course development, and research. Other duties include to actively apply for external research funding and to follow ongoing research within the lecturer’s research area, as well as to follow the ongoing development in society.

Requirements: For a position as a senior lecturer, the requirements are a Ph.D. degree or the equivalent academic competence, pedagogical skills, and personal competence to carry out the duties of the employment successfully.

A requirement for proving pedagogical skills is that the applicant has passed a teachers’ training course of at least 10 weeks which is relevant for the position, or has the equivalent knowledge.

Another requirement is ability to teach in English or Swedish. If ability to teach in Swedish is not at hand at present, it is expected that it will be acquired within two years.

Qualifications: Equal importance will be given to scientific qualification and pedagogical skills for this position. The scientific qualification should be mainly in the area of Kurdish linguistics and/or literary studies. Research on and teaching of other Iranian languages and Iranian philology is also meritorious.

When scientific qualifications are evaluated, scientific excellence should be the main criterion. Experience of research initiation and working on joint research projects is meritorious.

When the pedagogical skills are evaluated, pedagogical quality should be the main criterion. The pedagogical skills should mainly refer to undergraduate teaching and be well documented. Experience of course development and teaching distance learning courses is meritorious. The extent of the teaching (both its scope and its depth) is of importance. Planning, initiating, leading and developing the education is crucial, as well as an ability to link teaching to research. Part of the pedagogical skills is also to be able to interact in pedagogical issues and discussions at the University and outside the academic setting.

Additional qualifications: Administrative competence is of importance for the position and will be given large significance. Administrative competence should be displayed by the ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work in an efficient and for the duty relevant way, and by being able to set and keep deadlines. Part of the competence is also ability to plan relevant activities and to manage financial resources in a way that is compatible with the priorities of the education, as well as to work in a structured way with full awareness of goals and quality.

When the University employs a new lecturer, the person should be chosen who upon a full qualitative evaluation is seen as having the best conditions to carry out the duties involved and develop the education, as well as being able to contribute to a positive development of the work and the Department in general.

The recruitment committee can for this employment chose interviews, a test lecture, and taking references. The applicant should therefore give a list of persons who can provide references about his/her competence as well as personal characteristics that are important for the employment, such as ability to cooperate, leadership abilities, functionality, life experience, and working methods of the applicant.

Parental leave, part time work due to care for children, experience of trade union assignments, military service and the like are regarded as work experience and should be stated in the CV.
