Uppsala University, Department of Chemistry - Ångström Laboratory

Department of Chemistry - Ångström Laboratory conducts research and education in chemistry. The Department has over 300 active persons, of which 200 are employees and the rest consists of guest researchers and students doing research at Master level. Annual turnover is just over 200 million SEK. For more information, visit the Chemistry Ångström's website.

The Department has a broad research profile within the fields of advanced materials synthesis. The emphasis is to clarify the relationship between structure and properties, using both experimental and theoretical approaches whenever possible.

Duties: 2D materials like graphene and 2D metals (like Pt) show very attractive catalytic and sensoring properties. They can therefore be used in, e.g., the catalytic conversion of hazardous CO2 molecules to more environmentally friendly hydrocarbons. Another application is the gas sensing of very subtle concentrations of benzene molecules. What will be most important to investigate in the present project are the modification and reactivity of materials surfaces for the formation and reactivity of various 2D materials. We are seeking one person for a Postdoctoral scientist position regarding simulations and modelling of these 2D materials. There will be a special focus on the formation of intercalated 2D metals, and on the formation of 2D metals on various substrates. For the latter type of 2D material, its reactivity towards, e.g., benzene molecules will be of a special interest to study. The work will take place in a highly intradisciplinary, interdisciplinary and intersectorial environment.

Requirements: The applicant should have a PhD in the area of computational chemistry, preferably combined with expertise in surface chemistry/physics. Experience of surface science is also considered a plus. We are looking for a highly motivated scientist that can work independently but also interact well with e.g. experimental team members and partners. Good communication skills in written and spoken English are required.

For employment as postdoc, the applicant should have a PhD exam or an international equivalent within a maximum of three years before the final application date. During certain circumstances, an earlier PhD can be acceptable.

Application: The application should be written in English and include: (i) Letter of motivation, with a short description of your research interests, and why you feel you are a good match for the project; (ii) CV including a description of relevant skills and experiences, as well as a list of potential publications; (iii) a copy of your degree diploma and a transcript of grades on courses taken during BSc and MSc studies; and (iv) names and contact information of three persons who can provide a letter of reference in support of your application, with a short description of how these individuals are professionally related to you.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
