Uppsala University, Department of Engineering Sciences

PhD Student in Urban Building Energy Modeling of Future Cities

in the subject of Engineering Physics at the Ångström Laboratory, Department of Engineering Sciences, with admission 1 May 2018 or by agreement.

We are looking for a graduate student to the Built Environment Energy Systems Group (BEESG) at the Department of Engineering Sciences. The PhD student will develop state-of-the-art simulation models for quantifying and visualizing the power and energy demand of entire cities.

Targets for energy efficiency and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, in combination with increasing urbanization and population growth, require cities around the world to find optimal strategies to transform local energy use and supply. Urban Building Energy Models (UBEMs), with which the energy use of the building stock in whole cities is simulated, have recently been proposed as powerful planning tools to meet this demand. This PhD project will develop an UBEM that fills several gaps in existing approaches, and use this model to study future scenarios for cities around the world.

The work will be based on computer modelling of heat flows in and around groups of buildings, heating, cooling and ventilation systems of buildings, systems for on-site generation of heat and electric power, and the interaction of buildings with energy distribution systems. Part of the work also consists of constructing a sensor network for collecting input and validation data to the model. The PhD student will build on our existing and currently developed models and will work closely together with other members of our research team. The project will in part also be performed in collaboration with Dalarna University, Sweden, as well as with international university partners.

The candidate must hold an MSc degree in building physics, energy systems or other areas relevant to the PhD topic, combined with a strong background in computer simulation. The candidate should also have good collaborative skills as well as independence in their work. Fluency in speaking and writing English is mandatory for the position.

Departmental duties, usually teaching, will at most cover 20%. Information about graduate studies are available at the department website http://www.teknik.uu.se and the Science and Technology Faculty website, http://www.teknat.uu.se. Local guidelines for salary apply.

Applications should include a brief description of research interests and past experience, a CV, copies of diplomas, certificates, copy of the thesis and other relevant documents. We want you to provide details of referees and/or attach letters of recommendation.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.

For more information about the position, please contact Associate Professor Joakim Widén, email: joakim.widen@angstrom.uu.se, phone 018-471 3782.

You are welcome to submit your application no later than March 31 2018, UFV-PA 2018 /703.

Are you considering moving to Sweden to work at Uppsala University? If so, you will find a lot of information about working and living in Sweden at www.uu.se/joinus. You are also welcome to contact International Faculty and Staff Services at ifss@uadm.uu.se.
