Uppsala University, Department of Public Health and Caring Sciences

Research group: The research group of Molecular Geriatrics is located at the Rudbeck Laboratory and is closely linked to the memory clinic at the Uppsala University Hospital. Our research is focused on protein aggregation in neurodegenerative diseases. The research is conducted in collaboration with other research groups internationally and in Sweden, as well as with various pharmaceutical companies.

Duties/Project description:
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia and the number of patients suffering from the disease will increase with increased life expectancy. Several new drug candidates are presently studied in clinical trials, but new biomarkers are needed to enable improved quantification of their potential effect on disease progression. Ideally, these biomarkers should be based on non-invasive measurements of those proteins that are believed to cause Alzheimer’s disease. The medical imaging technique positron emission tomography (PET) can be utilized to visualize and quantify biological processes in the brain and to study drug effects on brain pathology. The focus of the project is preclinical development of PET-diagnostics based on both established and novel radioligands. Another aim will be to use PET to investigate drug effects and brain pharmacokinetics during neurodegeneration, mainly in Alzheimer’s disease. The project includes both in vitro and in vivo work, as well as analysis of the generated data.

The PhD student will mainly focus on his/her research education. However, other responsibilities such as teaching and administrative tasks may also be included (max 20 %)

Requirements:
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic student for a PhD position. We welcome applications from highly motivated candidates that already have, or who expect to soon have, a Master of Science degree in biomedicine, engineering, natural sciences, pharmacy, medicine or similar. Experience with radiochemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacokinetics, in vivo imaging techniques (e.g. PET, SPECT or MR), biochemistry, protein analysis (ELISA, Western blotting, chromatography), histology (including immunohistochemistry) and in vivo models is an advantage. The applicant must also have a good knowledge of written and spoken English.

More information about PhD studies at the medical faculty at Uppsala University can be found at: http://www2.medfarm.uu.se/utbildning/forskarniva/

Application: The application should be written in English and contain a cover letter describing the applicant’s research interests, an updated CV including a list of previous publications (if any), as well as copies of diplomas and certificates of higher academic degrees. Also include information about previous experience of research and why you would like to be enrolled as a PhD student. Please also attach contact details (name, e-mail, phone number) to two referees and/or letters of recommendation.

Selection Process: Selection of candidates is based on qualifications, previous work and/or research experience within the field of medical and pharmaceutical sciences, and personal suitability. The selection is made by the supervisors and the enrollment is approved by the Medicine and Pharmacy disciplinary domain at Uppsala University.

Position: The graduate program covers four years of full-time study. The position can be combined with teaching or other duties at the department (maximum 20%), which prolongs the employment with the corresponding time.
