Uppsala University hereby declares the following position, at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, starting August 2018, to be open for application:
Project description: We are looking for a highly motivated and ambitious Ph.D. student for experimental work on dynamical and non-equilibrium properties of magnetic systems. The overall aim of the Ph.D. project is to explore the speed limits for the switching of magnetic materials relevant for instance in information technology. Ultrashort (10-15sec) x-ray pulses from free electron laser will be used to directly observe magnetic dynamics on ultra-small nanoscale dimensions and ultra-short timescales. There will be a close collaboration with groups developing a theoretical description of the measured processes and groups growing state-of-the-art materials.
Research environment: The Department of Physics at Uppsala University offers a world-class environment for interdisciplinary materials research with close links between experiment and theory. The project will be carried out in the group of Prof. Hermann Dürr, who recently moved from Stanford to Uppsala. Research will be carried out using femtosecond laser spectroscopy at Uppsala but there will also be frequent visits to X-ray Free Electron Lasers in Stanford and Hamburg for experiments.
Employment: The position as a Ph.D. student is limited to four years of full-time studies, consisting of research and coursework. There may be other duties at the department, related to teaching and administration. Further information is available at www.physics.uu.se.
Application: The applicant should have a Master’s degree in physics, or equivalent, with a strong background in condensed matter experiments using femtosecond lasers or x-rays. Prior experience with magnetism or strongly correlated electron materials is an advantage but not required. Fluency in both written and spoken English is an absolute prerequisite. The application should include a personal letter, carefully explaining scientific interests and motivation for pursuing a Ph.D. degree, CV, and a verified list of course grades. If available, a Master’s thesis (finished or in draft form) can also be included. Two letters of recommendation should be included in the application.
Rules governing Ph.D. candidates are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala university's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/search/?hits=30&languageId=1&search-language_en=English
Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
Salary: According to local agreement for PhD students and teaching assistants.
Starting date: 1 August 2018
Type of position: Full time position.
