Uppsala University, Department of Chemistry - BMC

The Department of Chemistry is located within Uppsala Biomedical Centre in Uppsala and conducts the main research in Biochemistry, Organic chemistry, Analytical chemistry, and part of Physical chemistry, at the Faculty of Science and Technology. It focuses on issues related to Catalysis, Molecular recognition, and the structure and dynamics of Complex molecular systems, and the relationship between the presence of chemical compounds and biomolecules with various disease states. There is also strong research in method and technology development, including the design and synthesis of small organic molecules and biological macromolecules. Development of new biochemical and analytical methods are the basis for advanced studies of biological systems and their regulation, and how diseases can be diagnosed and treated.  The research at the department benefits from access to other chemistry disciplines nearby and interacts with Biomedicine, Pharmacy, Physics and Materials science. Scientists with expertise in Biophysical methods of interaction analysis are responsible for a facility belonging to SciLifeLab, part of a national infrastructure for research in Life science. The creative and research-intense environment contributes to a broad knowledge base as well as cutting-edge expertise. In addition, Uppsala University has a highly developed innovation office that gives support for commercialization and external collaboration. Click here to read more about us.

Uppsala University offers one of the country’s best educations in chemistry, with strong links to world leading research. A wide range of courses, excellent research connections, and extensive lab work characterizes the teaching. Together with our colleagues at the Department of Chemistry – Ångström, we are responsible for the Bachelor and Master programs in Chemistry at Uppsala University. We are also responsible for the Master of Science in Chemical Engineering, together with the Faculty of Pharmacy. We provide courses and parts of courses to other education programs, both within and outside the Faculty. Click here to read more about our education.

We are recruiting an Assistant Professor in Analytica chemistry with specialization in analysis of peptide hormones and neuropeptides

Duties: The position includes teaching, research and administration. The applicant will start an independent research area within bioanalytical chemistry, in particular studies of peptide hormones and neuropeptides with mass spectrometry. You are expected to apply for external funding for your research and through successful applications start your independent research program. Teaching duties include course responsibility, course administration and supervision of second- and third-cycle students. The holder shall also keep abreast of developments within the subject area and the developments in wider community that are significant for the work at the university. Appointment Period: The position can be held for a maximum of four years.

Qualifications Required: According to the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance those qualified for appointment as associate senior lecturer are persons who have obtained a doctoral degree or achieved the equivalent competence.  Applicants who have obtained a doctoral degree or achieved the equivalent competence in seven years or less prior to the end of the application period will be given priority. For this position a doctoral degree in Analytical chemistry or another close related area alternatively achieved equivalent competence.

According to Uppsala University´s appointments regulations, teaching expertise is an eligibility requirement for appointment as a postdoctoral research fellow. To obtain teaching expertise, the applicant should have participated in teacher training for higher education of relevance to operations at the University, comprising at least five weeks, or be considered to have acquired the equivalent competence. Assessment Criteria/Ranking

Research Expertise and Teaching Expertise: The ranking of eligible applicants will be based primarily on research expertise. Research expertise comprises research merits as well as the applicant´s potential to contribute to the future development of both research and teaching. In assessing research expertise special weight will be attached to research merits in development of analytical methods for studies of peptide hormones and neuropeptides; in particular single-cell profiling, mass spectrometry imaging and HDX-MS. These criteria will be assessed through documentation of published peer-reviewed original research articles in leading, international, scientific journals. The research amplitude, especially in terms of depth and breadth, will be considered. Also the ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and education on research level and ability to receive external funding, as well as shown ability to interact both within the research and with the surrounding society will be considered.

Also teaching expertise will be afforded consideration. Teaching expertise comprises educational and teaching qualifications. In assessing teaching expertise teaching quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, must also be afforded consideration. The ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop education and teaching, as well as ability to tie teaching to research in the subject, subject didactic and university pedagogic will be considered. Also, the ability to interact around subject didactic questions with actors within and outside the university is important to consider. Especially the candidates’ possibilities to contribute to future development of research and educations will be considered.

Administrative Expertise: Administrative expertise is shown through the ability to plan, organize and prioritize work in an efficient and for the purpose adapted way and through the ability to set and keep deadlines among other things.
