Uppsala universitet, institutionen för geovetenskaper

The Department of Earth Sciences is one of the most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Our courses offer a wide range within the geoscience area and several of the department's programs have received the highest rating in evaluations by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education (Högskoleverket) and the Swedish Higher Education Authority (Universitetskanslersämbetet). The Programme for Air, Water, and Landscape Science encompasses education and research in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography. More information on the programme for air-water and landscape science can be found at www.geo.uu.se/research/luval/.

Description of the subject area:
The purpose of the project is to investigate the air-water exchange of energy, water
vapor and carbon (mainly carbon dioxide but also methane) and the processes
influencing this exchange in marine and inland water environments. There is presently
knowledge lacking on these processes and the methods to introduce them into climate
models. The project aims at using existing and new micrometeorological data on airwater exchange processes, and also to evaluate the variations (horizontal and vertical) of carbon dioxide concentration in the surface water as well as other parameters as mixing depth and stratification. The project is linked to the ICOS-station
Östergarnsholm (www.icos-sweden.se/station_ostergarnsholm.html) and the
BONUS project INTEGRAL (Integrated carboN and TracE Gas monitoRing for the
bALtic sea).
