Two PhD student positions in Information Studies - Hiring in process/Finished, not possible to apply

At the Department of Archival Science, Library and Information Science, Museology and Cultural Heritage Studies (ALM) with starting date October 1, 2018 at the earliest.

The PhD students will be working in the EU Horizon 2020 Marie-SkÅ‚odowska-Curie Project: MSCA-ETN-POEM (764859). Their doctoral research will consist of working with one of the following two project (one doctoral student is selected for each project).

Professional take on participation
The project will study how professionals in memory institutions cope with the requirements of PMW in their daily work and how they can integrate participatory ideas and concepts in their professional practices of collecting, sustaining, imparting, and researching. The concepts and understandings of participation of the professionals in memory institutions will be inquired in its variety considering the job roles, gender aspects, and diverse professions. The project creates new knowledge on how professionals frame participation in heritage work and on the organisational changes coming up with these changes. Basic level understanding of written Swedish is an advantage in this project.

Managing participatory ecologies of memory modalities
The research project will study from an ego-centric perspective how people manage their participation in memory work as membership of diverse networks that constitute the personal participatory ecologies between individuals (professionals, non-professionals), collective, and institutional actors by doing case studies. It will seek to understand the memory modalities, and how they facilitate or restrict in each case the participation envisioned by the people. The expected results shall create new knowledge on the professional engagement in memory practices with other actors in society, a conceptual analytical framework for mapping and visualising participatory ecologies and to provide a functioning proof of concept based on a set of open source libraries (e.g. snap.py, scrapy, Python API wrappers for major social media sites) that can be expanded for a source product in the future, or fully or partially, integrated to or implemented with other tools and frameworks (e.g. Cytoscape, Gephi). The specifications for the tool will be developed on the basis of the empirical research of PhD 12 in close cooperation with the projects of PhD 10, 11, 13 (for descriptions of the other projects, see www.poem.uni-hamburg.de)

Doctoral students are required to undertake transnational mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) when taking up the appointment.

Education at the doctoral level consists of 4 years doctoral studentship (doktorandanställning). Doctoral students are expected to pursue their studies full-time and actively take part in the department's activities. Departmental duties (typically teaching and administration) at a level of at most 20% can be included in the positions.

Qualifications required: Applicants must have a Masters degree in Information Studies, Library and Information Science, Archival Science, Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies or a corresponding degree in a nearby field. In addition, the candidates must fulfill the criteria for MSCA doctoral students as indicated in the MSCA work programme http://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/data/ref/h2020/wp/2016_2017/main/h2020-wp1617-msca_en.pdf. Applicants must demonstrate that their ability to understand and express themselves in both written and oral English is sufficiently advanced for them to fully benefit from the network training. At the time of employment by the host university, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host university for more than 12 months in total during the last 3 years before the applicant is admitted. Short stays, such as holidays, are not taken into account. A selected candidate must be an Early-Stage Researcher according to the MSCA work programme guidelines. Early-stage researchers are those who, at the time of employment by the host university, are in the first four years (or full-time equivalent) of their research careers and not in possession of a doctoral degree. This is measured from the date they obtained a degree which formally entitled them to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the research training is provided, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate was envisaged.

• proof of sufficient English language skills (e.g., TOEFL)
• verified copy of the degree certificate for a relevant master's degree (or equivalent) and a diploma supplement, and a transcript of records (if applicable)

• a chapter of Master's Thesis (alternatively the entire thesis), or a paper or a publication in English (if applicable) and other relevant documentation the applicant chooses to present as a support for his/her application.

Selection: The selection will be based on candidate's ability to profit by the education and to successfully complete one of the two above indicated projects. In addition, strong interest in interdisciplinary collaboration, strong motivation to work in a cooperative and flexible team environment, preparedness to travel and fulfil all secondments, preparedness to contribute to the outreach of the project, IT knowledge (basic communication skills) as well as skills mentioned in the individual project descriptions are considered as an advantage.
