Uppsala universitet, Department of Chemistry - BMC

The Department of Chemistry – BMC is located at the Uppsala Biomedical Centre campus. It belongs to the Faculty of Science and Technology and conducts research in biochemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and physical chemistry. The research is focused on catalysis, molecular recognition, structure and dynamics of complex molecular systems, and relationships between the presence of biomolecules and organic compounds with various disease states. There is also strong research in method and technology development, including the design and synthesis of small organic molecules and biological macromolecules. Development of new biochemical and analytical methods are the basis for advanced studies of biological systems and their regulation, and how diseases can be diagnosed and treated. The department benefits from close contacts with other disciplines nearby and interacts with biomedicine, pharmacy, physics and materials science. Scientists with expertise in biophysical methods of interaction analysis are responsible for a facility belonging to SciLifeLab, part of a national infrastructure for research in life science. The creative and research-intense environment contributes to a broad knowledge-base as well as cutting-edge expertise. In addition, Uppsala University has a highly developed innovation office that gives support for commercialization and external collaboration. Click here to read more about us.

Uppsala University offers one of the country’s best educations in chemistry, with strong links to world- leading research. A wide range of courses, excellent research connections, and extensive lab work characterizes the teaching. Together with our colleagues at the Department of Chemistry – Ångström, we are responsible for the Bachelor and Master programs in Chemistry, and the Master of Science in Chemical Engineering, together with the Faculty of Pharmacy. We provide courses and parts of courses to other education programs, both within and outside the faculty. Click here to read more about our education.

We are looking for a researcher for a fixed-term employment of six month.

Duties: In this position synthesis and purification of glycosylated amino acids  and peptides derived from proteins found in joints will be conducted. Emphasis will be put on developing and scaling up a protocol for preparation of amounts of a glycosylated derivative of hydroxylysine. Various glycopeptides will also be prepared on solid-phase and then purified. The work is part of a larger project aimed at development novel treatments for rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory disease that affect joints.

Requirements: PhD in organic chemistry that has provided several years of experience in organic synthesis and synthesis and biological evaluation of peptides and peptide conjugates. Extensive practical experience in synthesis, purification and characterization of organic compounds and complex polypeptides is a requirement, just as great accuracy in the laboratory work and good ability to handle the instrumentation used for peptide synthesis. We put great emphasis on personal qualifications. This position demands a person with strong delivery focus and ability to work interdisciplinary to ensure that the project reaches its overall objective to develop diagnostic kits. Therefor it is important with ability to work independent. In this project there are collaborations with other groups inside and outside the project, there for we will put great emphasis on the ability to cooperate. We work in an international environment and therefor it is very important with the ability to communicate in English.

The application: The application should be written in English and must include the following documents: (1) a letter describing the applicant’s interest in the field of the position, (2) a Curriculum Vitae with a list of scientific publications, and (3) a brief description of the applicant's previous research in the field of organic and peptide chemistry (1-2 pages).
