The Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University is one of the largest and scientifically broadest Earth Science Department in Sweden and includes research programmes in Mineralogy, petrology and tectonics, Geophysics, Palaeobiology, Hydrogeology, Meteorology and Natural resource science.

Within the framework of a recently granted ERC project (HydroSocial Extremes), we are announcing three PhD student positions. The project aims to unravel the interactions between hydrological extremes (floods and droughts) and society.

The three PhD positions will be placed at Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences, Programme for Air, Water and Landscape Sciences.

Duties/Project description: These PhD projects will analyze the spatial-temporal relationships between the occurrence of hydrological extremes, i.e. drought and flood events, and changes in human societies. The projects will focus on the study of global hotspots, i.e. numerous human-environment systems across scales and gradients of socio-hydrological conditions. The selected students will be affiliated to the Centre of Natural Hazards and Disaster Science (CNDS, www.cnds.se)

Requirements: The applicant shall have university science degree (MSc) in environmental sciences, geography, hydrology or related areas relevant to the PhD topic. Other degrees may also be considered, in particular civil and environmental engineering. The successful candidate shall have a solid base in mathematics, statistics, and basic computer skills. Good communication skills in English, both spoken and written, are required.

Application: The application should include a 2-page statement of research interest and motivation for applying for this PhD position. More specifically, how applicant’s research interests are related to the PhD topic, which is broadly defined above, and how applicant’s qualifications meet the required qualifications. The application should also include a CV/resume, verified list of course grades and contact details for at least two reference persons. The holder of a Ph.D. position shall primarily devote her/his time to own research studies. Other departmental work, such as educational or administrative can be part of position (max 20%). The applicant must be eligible for Ph.D. studies. Priority is given to those who are deemed to show the greatest aptitude for a successful completion of graduate studies. Local guidelines at Uppsala University determine the salary levels.
