The Department of Medical Sciences, Uppsala University, has an opening for one position as a statistician in the group of Molecular Epidemiology. The group, consisting of about eight persons, will from February 2018 be physically located within the new Epidemiology Hub at Dag Hammarskölds väg 14, where about 40 active epidemiologists and statisticians will have their work place, enabling collaboration and support.

Area of responsibilities/description of the work
The work will be supervised by group leader Associate Professor Tove Fall. Tove Fall and her group are mainly working with diabetes and diabetes-related traits using a variety of methods, ranging from modern molecular epidemiology techniques with –omics data to more traditional epidemiology approaches in large datasets. The research environment is international with English being the working language. See tovefall.se for more information and recent publications. The group currently includes several members with thorough training and experience in advanced statistical, epidemiological and bioinformatics methods.

The primary work responsibility will be to perform statistical analyses in various research projects and to some extent more bioinformatic tasks such as quality control and normalization procedures of –omics data. An important part of the work will also be to advice junior colleagues on statistical matters. The main statistical software used in the group are Stata and R. The employee will be able to develop their skills through courses and also exchange visits with other research groups.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate is highly motivated with thorough education on master or PhD level within statistics.

  • University diploma on MSc level or equivalent in a relevant subject (e.g. statistics, medicine, biology, bioinformatics)
  • Proficiency in written and oral English is a requirement.

Personal characteristics are important. The applicant should be stringent in their analysis, have a responsible attitude and be able to work independently. The applicant should also be able to share his/her knowledge with colleagues. The person should also be service-minded.

Other
Knowledge/interest in bioinformatics, epidemiology and/or medicine is an advantage. A PhD in a relevant subject is an advantage, but not necessary.
