Uppsala universitet, Juridiska fakulteten, Juridiska institutionen

A doctoral student position in fiscal law or business law at the Department of Law.

Beginning 1 June 2018 or upon agreement.

The subject of fiscal law covers the rules of law governing the obligations of private individuals and companies to pay taxes, such as income tax, value added tax, property tax, excise duties etc. It also covers the rules of procedure for how taxation is to take place. In the broadest sense, the subject of business law covers all economically related law that impacts business and entrepreneurship. Research in the subject is primarily intended to generate new knowledge about how various components of the subject of business law interact with one another. One example of this is when the rules in one legal area impact or have significance to the application of rules in one or several other legal areas.

This announcement focuses on fiscal law. Admission may either be for the research topic of fiscal law or business law, but the primary research focus should be tax law.

The individual admitted as a doctoral student in conjunction with this announcement should be focused first and foremost on his or her doctoral education. Admission requires that the applicant can benefit from third-cycle education.

Stipulations on employment as a doctoral student can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 7, Sections 34-41; in the university’s rules and guidelines, http://regler.uu.se; and in the Department of Law’s general syllabus general study plan

Funding
The admitted doctoral student will be fully funded through grants from the research foundation Uppsala Centre for Tax Law, which also includes supplementary funding that makes it possible to take out insurance that provides coverage equal to that of an employed doctoral student. The funding lasts for a net study period of 4 years, but upon agreement, the time may be extended to 5 years via the doctoral student carrying out teaching etc. (20 percent of study time at most). In this case, the doctoral student is employed by the Department of Law for the teaching-related component of the position.

Eligibility

The terms of eligibility are stipulated in Chapter 7, Section 39-40 of the Higher Education Ordinance, Uppsala University’s Admissions Ordinance UFV 2012/2057, and the Faculty of Law’s supplementary rules in the general syllabus for third-cycle studies, reg. no JURFAK 2016/18. In order for the candidate to be eligible for admission to the Faculty of Law, he or she must have:

1) completed in Sweden a Bachelor of Legal Science, Master of Laws or the law track; or

2) acquired expertise in Sweden or abroad corresponding with what individuals who have completed the above-mentioned qualifications can be assumed to have. When evaluating whether this expertise is sufficient, consideration should be given especially to what the requirements are for successfully completing the programme in the particular third-cycle subject.

Applicants must have sufficient knowledge of Swedish or English.
