Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences is one of the most complete of such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Our courses offer a wide range within the geoscience area and several of the department's programs have received the highest rating in evaluations by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education and the Swedish Higher Education Authority. For more information see www.geo.uu.se.

The Programme for Air, Water, and Landscape Science encompasses education and research in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography. More information on the program can be found at www.geo.uu.se/research/luval/. One of the research groups has a focus on research in geohydrology. During the recent years an important application has been the geological storage of CO2, an area where we have been active e.g. in a number of EU financed research projects and are also carrying out  unique field experiments in-situ, at a dedicated CO2 field injection site (see e.g. www.co2mustang.eu).

Related to this research and to be associated to this research group, Department of Earth Sciences now has open a position as Post Doctor in Geohydrology, for a period of two years.

Duties:
The research will primarily consist of modelling and analysis of data from field experiments carried out at Heletz, Israel pilot CO2 injection site. The experiments have been carried out within EU financed R&D projects, with the objective to quantify capillary/residual trapping of CO2 in deep underground. The experiments have been carried out in 2016-2018 and provide extensive data sets. Even other research related to residual trapping of CO2 can be included to the work, such as modelling of these processes with so-called pore network models. Teaching at a level of 10-20% can also be included, to be agreed upon separately.

Qualifications required:
Qualified for the appointment as post doctor are persons who have obtained a doctoral degree or equivalent, in geohydrology, hydrology, geophysics or similar, with specialization towards geohydrology or related topic. Priority will have those applicants who have received their degree no longer than 3 years ago. Under special circumstances can the degree be older than three years. Such special circumstances include periods of illness, parental leave, assignments of trust etc. Evaluation of the application is primarily based on applicant’s ability to carry out independent research based on scientific principles.

Previous experience in modelling complex geohydrological processes, in particular multiphase flow processes, is a requirement.

Additional merit:
Previous experience in modelling of processes related to geological storage of CO2 in field and pore scale is a strong merit. In addition, we value independent way of working in combination with willingness to collaborate with other members of the research group and our international collaborators in the related research projects.

Application:
The application should include a CV, copies of the examination certificates, PhD Thesis as well as other possible documents the applicant wishes to include. In addition, a description of applicant’s previous research experience and how it is related to the present position, should be included (maximum 2 pages).

Additional information:
