SciLifeLab (www.scilifelab.se) is a national center for large scale and hypothesis driven research within molecular bioscience. SciLifeLab is a collaboration between four universities in Uppsala and Stockholm: Uppsala University, The Royal Institute of Technology, Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University. SciLifeLab is now recruiting an excellent research group leader to strengthen the research within the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy in Uppsala. The current position is within Cancer Immune Therapy.

This position is part of the SciLifeLab Fellows program 2015-2019 within the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy. Upon appointment the post will be placed at one of the Departments.

Description of the subject area: This area includes experimental and translational research in tumor immunology and/or cancer immune therapy.

Duties: Research, teaching and administrative tasks. Teaching includes course responsibility and course administration. Teachers are also responsible for keeping abreast of developments within their own subject areas and developments in the wider community that are significant for their teaching roles in higher education. A post as associate senior lecturer aims at providing qualifications for teaching appointments which require higher qualifications regarding research expertise and teaching expertise.

Period of employment: A post as associate senior lecturer is a four year career development position. On special grounds the term may be extended. The total period of employment may not, however, exceed six years. A person employed as associate senior lecturer may, after an assessment, be promoted to a position as senior lecturer for an indefinite term.

Eligibility: Eligible for a post as associate senior lecturer is, according to the higher education ordinance Ch. 4 Sect. 12a, a person who has obtained a doctoral degree or achieved the equivalent research expertise. Priority should be given to applicants who have obtained their doctoral degree or achieved equivalent competence at the most seven years prior to the of the application period. According to the  Employment regulations for Uppsala university (AO) § 38 teaching expertise in accordance with § 23 is required. Furthermore, according to the employment regulations, a general eligibility requirement is that the applicant must have the personal characteristics required to perform the duties of the post well.

To be eligible for appointment as a teacher an applicant must have a documented ability to teach in Swedish and/or English. A person who does not have the ability to teach in Swedish may be required to obtain that ability within two years.

Assessment: When selecting among eligible applicants weight will primarily be given to research expertise, and thereafter to teaching expertise. [Weight will be given to clinical expertise.] Special weight will be attached to the applicant’s potential to contribute to future development of both research and teaching.

In assessing research expertise research quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of research, primarily in regard to depth and breadth, must also be afforded consideration. Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and education in the third cycle, the ability to acquire funding for research in competition, as well as the demonstrated capacity to interact with others both within academia and in the wider community.

In assessing teaching expertise teaching quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, must also be afforded consideration. Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop teaching and instruction, as well as the ability to connect research to teaching in respect to research in the subject at hand, subject didactics, as well as teaching and learning in higher education. The ability to interact concerning issues of teaching and learning in higher education with actors inside and outside the University is also included in teaching expertise.

When the University appoints new teachers those applicants must be selected who, following a qualitative holistic assessment of their competence and expertise, are judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to help advance operations.

Assessment; other expertise: Administrative (other) expertise is important for the post and will be afforded large/very large weight. Attention will also be paid to the ability to collaborate with the wider community and to inform others about research and developmental work.

Administrative expertise is demonstrated, for example, through the capacity to plan, organize, and prioritize work in an efficient and task-related manner as well as through the ability to assign and observe time frames. Expertise includes overall operational planning and the capacity to manage resources in a way that reflects operational priorities as well as the ability to work in a structured manner based on an awareness of goals and quality.

Management expertise is demonstrated through the capacity to lead operations and personnel, make decisions, take responsibility, and motivate others, providing them with what is needed for the efficient achievement of common goals. The abilities to coordinate the group and help create a sense of involvement, participation, and enjoyment in work and to deal with conflicts constitute further examples of demonstrated expertise.

When assessing collaborative expertise, experience with and expertise in education and outreach, editorships and other activities related to knowledge exchange between the university and the surrounding community, as well as experience with innovation and entrepreneurship, shall be of significance.

Applicants’ parental leaves of absence, part-time work for care of children, or the like may come to be considered as qualifying work experience.
