Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för folkhälso- och vårdvetenskap

Research group: The research group of Molecular Geriatrics is located at the Rudbeck Laboratory and is closely linked to the memory clinic at the Uppsala University Hospital. Our research is focused on protein aggregation in neurodegenerative diseases. The research is conducted in collaboration with other research groups internationally and in Sweden, as well as with various pharmaceutical companies.

Duties: Alzheimer’s disease is today the most common form of dementia. Thus, there is a need to reliably and non-invasively diagnose Alzheimer’s disease, to follow disease progression in the brain and to measure effects of disease modifying treatments. The medical imaging technique positron emission tomography (PET) is utilized to visualize and quantify biological processes in vivo, and the method provides unique opportunities to diagnose patients without obtaining biological samples which could potentially be a discomfort to the patient under investigation. The focus of the present project is to develop radiochemistry and automated synthesis techniques for flourine-18 labelling of antibodies and proteins. The over-all aim of the project is to contribute to the development of protein based radioligands to be used as diagnostics for Alzheimer’s disease. The work will be primarily conducted at the Uppsala University Hospital PET center and the Uppsala University Rudbeck laboratory.

Requirements: We welcome applications from highly motivated and enthusiastic candidates with a PhD in radiochemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, biochemistry/biotechnology, organic chemistry, chemical engineering or similar. Previous experience of independent research within the field of radiochemistry is required.  The applicant must also have a good knowledge of written and spoken English.

Post-doctor means a person who received a PhD, or similar foreign degree, no more than three years before the last day of application. If there are eligible reasons the PhD can be received earlier. The PhD can be received later than three years by the following reasons:

  • Absence due to illness
  • Parental leave
  • Leave for service within the national defense
  • Leave for assignments within the trade-union
  • Leave for clinical service
  • or other similar circumstances

Additional qualifications: Experience with PET radiochemistry involving fluorine-18 or carbon-11 is a strong merit. Knowledge of PET tracer synthesis, radio analytical techniques, protein modifications, medical imaging and in vivo techniques is an advantage.

Application: The application should contain a cover letter (maximum 1 page) describing the applicant’s research interests, an updated CV with a list of publications, copies of diplomas and certificates of higher academic degrees as well as contact details (name, e-mail, phone number) of two referees.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
