Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för fysik och astronomi

Uppsala University hereby declares the following position to be open for application: Ph.D. position in Condensed Matter Theory at the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Starting date: August 2018. Research division: Materials theory.

Project description: We are looking for a highly motivated and ambitious Ph.D. student for theoretical work on dynamical and non-equilibrium properties of superconducting systems. The overall aim of the Ph.D. project is to find new and measurable signatures of odd-frequency superconductivity, which is a very unique superconducting state that is odd in time, or equivalently frequency, the very opposite to the ordinary behavior of superconductivity. Due to its time dependence, odd-frequency superconductivity is a dynamical order and the project aims to explicitly probe the resulting dynamical and non-equilibrium properties in a variety of systems. Examples range from fluctuation and noise effects in molecular superconducting junctions to inelastic scattering in bulk superconductors. The project requires extensive analytical calculations using advanced many-body methods, often in combination with numerical work. This Ph.D. project is part of a larger project focusing on new materials and mechanisms for odd-frequency superconductivity, funded by the European Research Council (ERC).

Research environment: The division of Materials theory at Uppsala University offers a world-class environment for materials theory research, with interests spanning from strongly correlated and topological states of matter to atomistic spin simulations and first-principles calculations of a very broad range of functional materials. The division currently consists of approximately 90 researchers, of which about a third are Ph.D. students. The project will be carried out in the group of Prof. Annica Black-Schaffer, currently consisting of four Ph.D. students and five postdocs, and in very close collaboration with Prof. Jonas Fransson.

Employment: The position as a Ph.D. student is limited to four years of full-time studies, consisting of research and coursework. Other duties at the department, related to teaching and administration, may be extend the position at a level of most 20%. Further information is available at www.physics.uu.se.

Application: The applicant should have a Master’s degree in physics, or equivalent, with a strong background in condensed matter theory or many-body theory. Prior experience with superconductivity, transport calculations, or non-equilibrium physics is an advantage but not required. Fluency in both written and spoken English is an absolute prerequisite. The application should include a personal letter, carefully explaining scientific interests and motivation for pursuing a Ph.D. degree, CV, and a verified list of course grades. If available, a Master’s thesis (finished or in draft form) can also be included. In addition, two letters of recommendation should be included in the application or be sent directly by the letter writer to annica.black-schaffer@physics.uu.se with the subject line “Letter of Recommendation, Ph.D. Position 2018”.

Rules governing Ph.D. candidates are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala university's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/search/?hits=30&languageId=1&search-language_en=English

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
