Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

Postdoctoral position. Studying of energy materials using X-ray based spectroscopies for two years starting 2018-04-01.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is the second largest at Uppsala University with about 350 employees and 10 different divisions and is situated at Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala. The Department was formed in January 2010 by merging the former Department of Physics and Astronomy with the Department of Physics and Materials Science. Webpage: http://www.physics.uu.se

Information about the project
The work will be conducted at the Division of Molecular and Condensed Matter Physics, Department of Physics and Astronomy. The research within the division is being based on experimental studies of the electronic structure of molecules and condensed matter. The most important experimental methods are based on X-rays, in particular electron- and X-ray spectroscopy. The research is going to be conducted mainly in the laboratory located in Uppsala, but also at synchrotron radiation facilities, both national (MAX IV laboratory in Lund) and international (such as BESSY in Berlin).

The aim of the project is to develop and use new methods of time-resolved electron spectroscopy, ambient pressure photoelectron spectroscopy (APPES), hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES), and/or high-resolution resonant inelastic scattering (RIXS). The work mainly concerns measurements of energy materials, specifically perovskite solar cells or Li-ion batteries focusing on the understanding of dynamic processes. It implies measurements of both model systems as well as applied systems. The instrumental development involves an exploration of the potential of time-resolved spectroscopy by modifying the existing equipment and the design and implementation of new equipment available through the division.

Duties: The duties include research and supervision. You will be one of the leaders of the experimental work aimed at the implementation of the new methods (e.g. of time-resolved electron spectroscopy, ambient pressure photoelectron spectroscopy (APPES), hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES), and/or high resolution resonant inelastic scattering (RIXS)). Opportunities for measurements at synchrotron radiation facilities are offered. A combination of ARTOF and megahertz pulse generation at UBjL (Uppsala-Berlin joint Laboratory) at BESSY II, Berlin is of particular interest.

Work may also involve supervision of master students and/or PhD students to a certain extent and in collaborations between physics and chemistry on material development and device design. Cooperation with other academic staff as well as with society in general is also important. Such connection is an advantage for further academic employment as well as for work in industry and the public sector.

Qualifications: Experimental experience in electron spectroscopies and UHV systems is considered as an advantage. To qualify for a postdoctoral position you must have skills equivalent to a PhD in a relevant field and be graduated not more than three years ago. Excellent knowledge of English is a must. If Swedish is not your native language, you are recommended to learn Swedish during the period. Uppsala University offers Swedish courses.

The application should include a statement of research interest, CV, certificates of exams, degrees and grades, a copy of the doctoral thesis, published articles or relevant materials, if available. Also, letter(s) of recommendation can be included.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.

Salary: Individual salary.

Starting date: 2018-04-01.
