Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences is one of the most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Our courses offer a wide range within the geoscience area and several of the department's programs have received the highest rating in evaluations by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education (Högskoleverket) and the Swedish Higher Education Authority (Universitetskanslersämbetet). For more information, please visit: www.geo.se.

The Programme for Mineralogy, Petrology, and Tectonics (MPT) encompasses education and research in mineralogy, petrology, and tectonics and geodynamics. The research in tectonics and geodynamics focuses mainly on the physical processes in the crust and upper mantle. Research areas includes basic process understanding in different tectonic settings, but also includes more applied research on mineral and hydrocarbon exploration, waste repository sites, and landslides. Teaching responsibilities are primarily within the Bachelor and Master Programmes in MPT. More information on the programme for Mineralogy, Petrology, and Tectonics can be found at http://www.geo.uu.se/research/min-pet-tek-en/

Duties/Project description:  The purpose of the project is to quantify penetrative deformation in different tectonic settings (compressional and extensional regimes) using different approaches including, scaled analogue models, together with high-resolution laser scanning, anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) analysis of field and model samples, 3D reconstruction using the software GoCAD and Move, and field structural mapping.

Penetrative strain is an essential component of deformation in fold-and-thrust belts and contributes to both porosity and permeability reduction and has an impact on fluid flow within the deformed lithologies. The focus of the PhD project will be on two elements; firstly, the spatial and temporal distribution of penetrative strain in model and natural fold and thrust belts; and secondly, quantifying the impact of friction, lithology and boundary conditions on penerative strain.

Requirements: The applicant shall have a university science degree (MSc) in structural geology or tectonics or similar discipline. Other technical or science degrees may also be considered. The successful candidate shall have a solid base in mathematics, physics, and basic computer skills. Experience in conducting fieldwork is required. Previous experience of programming and numerical modelling is considered a merit.

Application: The application should include a statement of research interest, CV/resume, verified list of course grades and contact details for reference persons. If available, a Master thesis and letters of recommendation can also be attached.

The holder of a Ph.D.-student position shall primarily devote her/his time to own research studies. Other departmental duites, such as educational or administrative can be part of the position (max 20%). The applicant must be eligible for Ph.D. studies. Priority is given to those who are deemed to show the greatest aptitude for a successful completion of graduate studies. Local guidelines at Uppsala University determine the salary levels.

Rules governing Ph.D. candidates are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala university's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/search/?hits=30&languageId=1&search-language_en=English
